Making A Wooden Block?

Problem is; I Need a couple of big old off cuts. But, I've burned every bit of scrap for miles around 😂

Seriously, guys; I need to make a couple of 'blocks', out of what ever I might have around. If I just sketch out the problem? It should all make sense:

I'm hanging one of these, old fashioned, clothes drying racks. Pulley ones? Right. And I want to put the two pulleys screws into the rafter. K? But; The c. 3" rafter lays over an 8" High joist. Cord, between those pulleys now needs to avoid that joist.

In an ideal world, I'd dig out a couple joist off cuts. As is? I need to build two blocks. With me now? Strap them Under the rafter and screw up into them, with the pulleys screws.

Thinking about the physics of it all. 'All' the stress will be Down. So, screwing up Through / Across the grains. Yeah? (I'm thinking, eight, three inch wide, strips of 1" plank? Glued and screwed. Problems?

Problem I have is with Fixing these blocks (Inverted walls) under the rafter, so's to strengthen them laterally. Just because.

What might I be missing, please, lads? 😐️

Why cant it go along the 8" exposed joist

can you access the top of the rafter, if so then get some threaded bar and drill up through it for a good fix

Pieces of 1" good quality ply will give the pulley a better grip.

how long is the thread piece on the pulley connection?

    @Calahonda52 :

Why cant it go along the 8" exposed joist?

Direction. That's have it going Across the 'room'. It needs to go Along. Plus, the joist goes Across and angles Down. Yeah? Sloped roof. I'll be down there, presently, if a snap shot might help give a bearing?

Can you access the top of the rafter?

No, mate. New roof's firmly on there.

Good quality ply will give a better grip.

Hmm. I Have some 1" Ply. " Good Quality "? What; In town?! Can't even get a straight plank, mate! But, yeah. I Have ply. It's to be indoors ~ bit obviously. Grip? It's a seven foot long drier. It'll be holding normal, everyday clothing and a quilt cover. My point is; I don't even know why I made it so long and capacious. I'll Never fill it! It'll never pull out. Not in my time.

How long is the thread piece?

5"? Both, presently, buried deep in that rafter. Well drilled though. Easy to unscrew. Take a tractor to Pull them out though.

Sleeping on it? (No. I'm not actually a bat! LOL!) I seem to recall people make this sort of device out of, like an inverted pyramid sort of shape? Maybe not so pointed. But, ye may know the thing? What's That all about, I wonder?

    Roof.JPG

See, now? That joist is an 8"x. And, there's Another, older 8x strapped to it. 8x what? I don't know, off hand. It's immaterial, as I'm not poking holes through them. Pulley cord (singular) needs to run between those two pulleys though.

I was talking to a bunch of random guys. Consensus was that any set up of many, many Further pulleys, to do a Heath Robertson? Nope. Can't go round it. Through it. Roof's above. Below's left. Right?

I figured I needed to make a laminated block (Seen it on the chube) But, I have this dim memory of that pyramid idea ~ without knowing Why they do that. And, I'm struggling with how to best sideways hold on what would amount to an 8 x 3", inverted sharks fin, hanging off a 3" base line 😐️ Bit 'Bottom Heavy'. Joist Hangers? Straps? What am I missing here, please?

Granted; As above, it'd hardly be getting Tested, sideways …..

If the problem is running rope over the joist there is one simple answer. Run the rope over something it won't wear against like a strip of non stick cutting board. I do that for the rope that pulls up a couple of chicken run doors.

You could even screw piece of non stick cutting board to one side of the beam and then drill a hole in the cutting board to run the rope through.

Wake me up when it's all over.

    @The Continental Op

Without writing a treatise; That sort of comes under HR and multiple pulleys. Rope would Start by coming Off the pulleys. Picture them from above? Centred on their rafter? Each one like: |||. Yeah? Try to get that rope out, up and over that joist? Get: |/|. Derailment :|

I don't just come bouncing in here, annoying you guys with, 'Which way to turn a screw?' questions. I rag them first 😂

But, never mind all that! " Chickens "? Literally, just been pounding the keyboard, trying to find some, around here. Quite fancy a turkey, actually. Pet one. Wind my neighbour up.

    But, yeah; Blocks 👍️

This is roughly what I thought you were trying to do?

so all you need is something to help the rope slide on the beam.

Wake me up when it's all over.

@The Continental Op That's the sort of thing, mate, yep 👍️ Only, they have a flat ceiling. I have a stable 😂

Pulley. It sits central, under a 3" wide beam. Trying to drag that rope to one side, to get it out from the beams straight run? It's gonna derail. Two such pulleys? That rope hasn't got a very good future.

My mission is to get those pulley wheels Lower. And, still in alignment.

You really don't need to do anything other than make the surface where the rope would go over beam with the current set up somewhat slippery.

If you use a pulley on the beam with the current set up you have to make the rope captive or it will drop off the pulley every time the rope goes slack.

If you want a "pulley" why not use a roller instead. Two blocks of wood about a foot apart nailed to the beam then nail or screw about a foot of broom handle between them to act as a roller.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I have no idea what you're on about Stig but if you want the pulleys to be tolerant of different rope angles, use conventional pulleys, and if you want them fixed, use pulley blocks.

" If you want a "pulley" why not use a roller instead. Two blocks of wood about a foot apart nailed to the beam then nail or screw about a foot of broom handle between them to act as a roller. "

    👊 That Bit!!! 🙏 😁

I don't even know where ye getting this 'Foot' from, let alone care! Ye absolute Beauty; Visualising that brought it to me! God, the clarity! Why did I not see this before? ::: Rafter, yeah? 3" x 6". Pulleys are screwed into it, in the picture. Okay? Hold that.

I have a load of 2x2's available. Chop, chop. Two lengths at, say 16"? Screw / bolt those, either side of where the pulley is now. See? 😁 'Broom Handle', or what ever, in There, at the bottom of the downward two prongs we've just created! Roller! And, it's a straight line, over to its oppo. Under that offending joist beam! 🤸‍♂️

    @Lumen : " I have no idea what you're on about Stig …"

    Nobody does! I don't! Gorgeous, isn't it? 😂

No; Seriously though, I've thunk and Thunk on this one. And, ye should See the utter chaos, with me having to find, then Learn, Knots, to string this thing with!

Can ye fathom what I'm seeing now, though? Bouncing off TCO's idea, there? Dunno, in all honesty, what the difference is, between pulleys and blocks. I'll try to better perfect that, when I set to. It's all making sense, in my head, now though 👍️

Two 2x's Vs all that stuff about 8x3 'fins'?! I sometimes wonder what Is going on, in my head! Complicate a bit of string, I could.

Dunno, in all honesty, what the difference is, between pulleys and blocks.

I'm not sure either, but I think this is a pulley

    image.png

..which dangles and swivels, and this is a pulley block

    image.png

    …which does neither.

I'm gonna buy one of those 'pens', ye can use like a mouse? I can't draw jack, with a mouse. Twitch of the wrist and: Picasso! 🙄

What I mean is; How much Easier this sort of thing would be, if I could just bang up a quick, line sketch, of what ever I'm trying to explain.

Picture Vs 1,000 Words Vs €15.00 ….? Off to amazon with me!

Look out for later ~ 'Illustrated' ~ posts! 😁

    Hi Stigura,

I've read a few of posts recently, with the intention of giving some advice myself.

I'm genuinely not trying to have a go, but the conversational language in your posts is almost completely impossible to follow.

While you've got some helpful advice already from the replies, it would be easier for people to help out if your posts were a little more direct.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭Stigura

    @kirving That's perfectly fair comment, mate 👍️

I know I don't come across like normal people. I see it alluded to, time and again. Only, I don't know How I do it. So, it's a bugger to stop 😐️

Regards 'Directness'?! Hah! How often have I had this little bet with myself; " I'll ask what 2 and 2 makes. See how off target This one goes! ". And, it usually does. 'Why not 4 ones, Stig?' . 'What I'd do, Stig? Three and One!'. 'Why 2 and 2? What are ye up to there? 7?' 😬

Nope. 6 of one ….. I can never seem to Keep an initial, 'simple' question on the straight, either 🤷‍♂️

Jeysus it is a "bleedin" stable to no need for horsing around.

Cant tell what the slope is but sorting this should take less than 10 minutes a side, T nuts in the space between the roofing and rafter and threaded bar

A length of plastic/ rubber pipe flexible enough to go over the joist, long enough to reach the pulleys, with the rope pulled through.

Clipped to joist so rope feeds on/off pulleys and hoist away.

Nay, I don't think we're flogging a dead horse, just yet ….. (Countless other puns about bridling, stable situations etc. That's that out of the way 😂)

Know what? This Whole job has been dragging along like a dead weight. That, usually, means only one thing: The gods have some other idea. Yeah? There's something I'm yet to spot.

Like, tonight? I'd left a sack of feed, somewhere. Tonight, the Feel of that paper made me stop and think! And, Seven foot long?! Single line, in here, generally holds my wash. Thirteen foot. Rack has Four, Seven foot 'lines'. Insanity! I, clearly, haven't thought this through 😬

Back to the drawing board then. I'll have another upward gazing session, in there, tomorrow. See what I see next. Oh, and talking of drawing? I've sent for that 'computer pen' sort of gadget. Could be handy. I'm plotting a new desk for myself now. God help us 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭Stigura

And, upwardly he gazed ….!!! ☝️

And, lo! The (probably) Absolutely obvious Was Revealed Unto His Eyes! 👀 👇️

    Hanger.JPG

Job practically did itself, lads; Moment I just stood back and stopped trying to fit a round peg ….! 😬

And, @Calahonda52 ? All Seven Foot, too! 😁 Always better to have it and not need it, eh? (Truth is? It just happened to fit, precisely, between those two points. Ticked Every box, regarding everything! Ye couldn't make this up! 😂)

Work notes, for anyone else, considering? 1. They 'weigh' a lot more than ye'd think! And that's empty! (No wonder the four inch (?) screws, on those pulleys) And, 2. The smallest cord is Still so close, within those pulleys? Guys; There simply isn't any room for pulling the cord aside, round, over or what ever. Lines need to be true. I tried otherwise. They rub like hell, and derail 😐️

But now, onto my desk! 😁

Not literally! I plan to make one.

I've come to this thread late. I'm leaving again…….

My brain hurts trying to make sense of those descriptions:)

🤣 Damn your eyes! I don't Believe ye just said that! Because, that's pretty much Exactly what I thought to reply, when I saw it!

Reckon they'll give me my owl little column, in the Times? " Do It With Stig ~ Solve The Puzzles. Work Out What The Bloody Hell He's On About: Then Help Him Make It! " 😂

But that only takes into account 3 dimensions. We are talking at least 4 and perhaps 5 here?

Wake me up when it's all over.

Ok then, it's like a jigsaw of words that a toddler just threw on the floor 😀

    Love ya Stig!

😂 I really don't see what all the fuss is about!

I was stuck, mid project. I came in here, seeking to bounce some ideas around. Get some input.

Input given. Inspiration gained ~ Thank You All, very much, lads! And the job is now finished. Very happy bunny. Great result for the forum 👍️

    What's not to like? 😁
