Copper pipes and expanding foam - any issues? Also, what material is recommended to block up spaces?

    Hi,

    I have used expanding foam around some pipes in the attic to block spaces there (mouse problems). Is there any long term issue with using expanding foam on copper water pipes?

    Also, is there a material recommended for use in blocking spaces around copper pipes? In my previous post on this I talked about using steel wool, which is not great over time as it rusts and degrades over time. Is there a good compatible material for using for blocking up holes/spaces around copper pipes?

    No, no reactions between urea foam (expanding foam) and copper that I am aware of. They are both pretty passive except you aren't supposed to allow it to touch electrical cables at all (PVC sheathing can react with some foams and insulators).

    Mortar is also good for blocking up holes except that is supposed to only be used if the copper pipe is sheathed with another copper pipe.
