Hi all, we have a detached house and wanted to do up the front driveway.
So confused about the options available: tarmac, concrete, asphalt, tiles etc.

Is there a rough estimate of how much it would cost and which ones are the best/ to avoid?

Most existing houses come with driveways in concrete or paving, some in tarmac. Depends on your budget, the area/size and then finding someone interested in quoting and highly recommended. There are a fair few cowboys around who will damage your water pipe / stop cock if you're not watching (happened to a neighbour). So watch out and cheapest is definitely not best these days, don't trust anyone "doing a deal" in the area!!

Myself - I priced resin but at 16K was too expensive so did in myself in paving for 1/2 that but 90% labour was all me. Took 3 months!

You can visit suppliers centers to see the paving options they have and some offer free design and consultancy and you can pick up samples of their products. Imprinted concrete is an option but I think it's dropped out of favour these days. Myself paving if you're on a budget and resin if you're rich!! Drive / walk around a few estates for inspiration!

What does "do up" mean? Do you just want a cosmetic improvement or is it failing in some way?

People always focus on the surface finish, but the most important aspects are a strong sub-base and good drainage.
