Vat registered company but have to make a few small one off purchases from Europe. It doesn't look like a big deal other than putting in the figures with VAT returns every 2 months but it is such a small amount, I am not sure I am arsed. Happy to just pay the VAT and not claim it back.

Are there any downsides such as increased oversight etc or does it in reality make no difference at all.

Ongoing it's no more effort to be registered for Intra EU VAT, but depending on your business Revenue may need several things clarified before approving the registration. I've seen things asked like a business outline, why are you seeking to trade with another EU country, details of a current premises (lease agreement), proof of trading (may not be required for an established business but was asked for a new one) among others I am forgetting, none of it too taxing but can seem a bit pedantic

Good to know, it is to buy parts for repairs, which I could get here but the "TAX" for shopping local is crippling. I would be buying from the suppliers they are buying from, and I would be happy to shop local but they are charging a 500% to 100% increase. This would be a one off purchase, or at least very small and irregular. I suppose my answer would be we won't be selling to the EU, it is just for parts.

So long story short, I shouldn't worry about it.
