Hi, I'm looking to get a replacement ignition barrel fitted (and possibly door lock, keys etc) for my wife's 2015 Yaris/Vitz (imported) as it was stolen last week only a few days after buying it.

I had rang around a few places in Dublin but finding it difficult to get somewhere that will provide this service

    Thanks!

Just replace it with a push button starter or else it will just get stolen again. The push buttons have immobilisers in them

thanks @User1998 - can you advise who would provide this button-install service?

and why would a push-button be more secure than a standard ignition barrel and immobiliser? I would have thought a push-button would be less secure since there's no key required?

great - thanks for the info @User1998 from checking around the ignition barrels replacement looks to be challenging alright, I'll check out your recommendation

The guys that steal these jap toyotas kniw that the ignition barrell ones don't have an immobiliser answer they kniw the push button do have an immobiliser so they mainly target the key/ignition barrel ones

Are you saying to fit a push button so it looks like it has an immobiliser? The push buttons themselves have no immobiliser functionality built in

The guy who installs them puts an immobiliser inside them. You have to put a plastic keyfob against the button in order for it to start

But in order for an immobiliser to work the RFID reader needs to read the code and send it to at least 1 module for verification (typically 2 modules the ECM, cluster)

If you just have an immobiliser in a button all you have to do is pop it out and join the wires and the car will start, it's not really an immobiliser

I dunno, he can put the key fob thing anywhere in the dash. Doesn’t have to be in the button. Like behind the traction control button or whatever.

Now that I think of it he usually put it in the steering column not the button itself

Yeah but essentially it's just something that looks like an immobiliser, it's not really an immobiliser due to the way it works, it doesn't matter where it's put it could be bypassed in seconds due to it's fundamental design.

Fair enough but the youngfellas stealing them aren’t really smart enough to figure that out. They’ll see a push button and won’t bother trying to steal it. They’re hardly gonna find the device if its behind a button or buried somewhere in the dash.

OP won’t find an ignition barrel off a Vitz anyway and if youngfellas see an ignition barrel they will just try steal the car again.

Any harm in putting an "Immobiliser & Push button" sticker on the windows so they don't just try and break in anyway?

What was in the push button location originally as it's moulded perfectly like it was meant to be there. Sorry I don't know the cars if it's an obvious answer.

So the Vitz that I was so sold was advised as having an immobiliser but I believe it wasn't because the car was stolen so easily and quickly. I also phoned the guy to check and he said it definitely had one.

From looking at the ignition barrel, the black ring (which is on the Irish/non-Jap import Yaris) is not present on the import car.

When looking at the internals of the key versus the key to the non-import Yaris, it seems like the immobiliser transponder is not in the import version.

So at least I have some evidence to present to the car dealer to show that I was sold a car which had virtually zero theft protection. I'll be demanding that he at least cover the costs of getting the car towed and the fitting of the start button, I think this is reasonable considering.

@User1998 - thanks - but for some reason your comment disappeared - no idea why, yeah I assumed that's how they stole it so quickly

Ok - next stop the car dealership to demand (negotiate?) a refund….

Yeah sorry I’ve no idea why that happened. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard of people getting full refunds when this happened to them because the car was mis sold to them. I would definitely ask the dealer to cover your costs, and if they won’t then perhaps consider the small claims court

@User1998 looks like it's small claims court time as I called out to the dealer this week and basically told him he was liable for various costs including the immobiliser installation and the towing fee (total €370) so he eventually agreed to pay €300. Several days have passed and several calls but no money received

The small claims court threat had to be wielded as they didn't refund me the money they said they would.

Got all the garage company details from Companies Registration Office (CRO.ie) for €2.50 then initiated the claim and sent them the screenshot. That must have rattled them enough to send me the money. I'd never buy from this garage/seller again.
