We have a heat pump and underfloor heating. Last bill was close to 400 (two month period). As it was summer I basically turned the heating off altogether as the house is A rated. Latest bill is 400+. Was expecting it to be a lot less with the heating turned off. Bit confused tbh.

I've had crazy bills for about a year now since I switches to one of these Smart meters. For the life of me I cant figure out where the usage on my bills is coming from. I used energy monitoring plugs on everything and took notes of how much each used for an hour then documented anything being used etc… Even bought a second plug in meter in case the other one was off.

Estimated things like power showers that I cant use a meter on. Bills are still coming in absolutely mental.

If you have a smart meter you can look at your usage over the day, shouldn't be to hard to figure out from the times of day what's costing you.

Our biggest usage is underfloor heating (4kwhr until heated and then 2 kwhr ticking over) and the oven but background usage outside of that is between 0.2 and 0.4kwhr. Showers are a big drain but only for a short period.

Smart meters will be a lot more accurate than the old analogue meters.

You don't need any "plugs". You simply sign up to the metrics on ESB networks and you can get hourly readings.

Electric showers are very heavy users of electricity. They are usually about 7kw - 9kw, so 7-9 units per hour of use. A 15 minute shower will cost about 60c.

A kettle is 2kw, an iron is about the same. Anything that involves heating water will be high use. The easiest saving is your washing machine - change to 30 degrees and a 30minute express wash and you'll save a fair whack. Nothing needs a 2 hour wash unless you've shat in the bed. Avoid tumble drying as much as possible - another heavy use.

Also, its amazing how many people don't renegotiate their rate every year. If you have not looked for a new rate or moved to a new supplier in the last 12 months you are paying about 30% more than you should be. It literally takes about 2 minutes to switch once you have your mprn and bank details.
