I want to set up basically a coming soon website using domain name that I currently own.

Do I need to pay a service provider to do this?

I started using an online site builder but when it came to applying my own domain, they wanted a paid account to allow that.

You need to pay for someone to host the domain. Cheapest you'll get is about €50 a year unless anyone here knows any better.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I use myhost.ie they have a €50 + VAT package. I found them easy to use and I loaded wordpress which makes it easy to maintain. When your full site arrives you need to make sure you have a package that will accommodate it both the size of the site and the amount of traffic you think you'll get. Then of course you can always have your own email address(s) with your domain name.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I use namecheap.com and find them good. At moment shared hosting for €22 for year then 42 for following years. Again depends on traffic etc.
