Hi can anyone advise if it's possible to add extra health expenses to a previous tax year that I already made a small claim in? It doesn't seem to give me the option to amend it on revenue.ie. thanks

You can go back 4 years. Just load the receipts you want to add, then go through the submission again.

The option to "amend" dosnt seen to be showing up for some reason unless I'm doing something wrong

Stick them into your return in January 2025.

Amending returns can lead to a closer inspection by Revenue.

That would be creating an incorrect return. Expenses relating to earlier tax years should not be included in later years tax returns. Eg you don't include expenses relating to 2021 in your 2023 tax return etc.

Eg you don't include expenses relating to 2021 in your 2023 tax return etc. If you have expenses relating to an earlier year, there is an option to amend your return for that year on your Revenue myaccount. If it's not there, just send a myenquiry to Revenue requesting assistance.

Yeah there is no option on any year to amend as I previously submitted a very small expense claim each year. I'm a bit scared now with the mention of a "closer inspection" by revenue!

In your Revenue myaccount. Click on review your tax 2020 to 2023. Select the year you want to amend from the drop down box. You will then see an option to view or amend. Click amend.

In drawing attention to yourself, what are you worried about? You already submitted a tax return for that year declaring all your sources of income and claiming tax credits/reliefs applicable to you? All you are doing is adding some additional unreimbursed qualifying health expenses to what you've already claimed. For peace of mind, you can upload your receipts so Revenue can view them if they want.

You can claim for the last 4 years bud.

Just make sure you can produce receipts if asked.

Thanks, I have every single receipt but I'm just paranoid that revenue would discover I had underpaid tax in some previous year! There is no option to amend when I click on the year which I presume is because I already submitted a claim for that year.

Yes but not lumping 4 years of expenses into 1 tax year. So for example not lumping expenses for 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 into your tax return for 2023.

Id prefer to claim individually for each year if possible so I think I will contact revenue and ask them why I don't have the option to amend any previous years

Stick the receipt and details into myenquiries and they should do it for you once it gets to someones desk, easiest way if the normal "request" button isn't there for your statement of liability. Mine doesn't say "amend " either, just request but when you do that you can make changes then.

You said to put them in their Jan 2025 return, which would be for 2024 expenditure alone. They have to amend the correct year.

Is it true that the paper option is no longer available to go back 4 years?

It must be all done online now?

You can only claim medical expenses credit against tax paid and not PRSI and USC? And it's only 20% you get back?

Paper tax returns are gone for years.

You can still file tax returns for up to four years ago on your Revenue myaccount. For example right now you could file a tax return for 2020 declaring all your sources of income and claiming tax credits/reliefs like qualifying unreimbursed health expenses incurred in 2020.

The tax relief on health expenses has been at the standard rate (20%) for years. It's relief against income tax paid. So you need to have paid income tax in the claim year to benefit from it. For example you claim relief on qualifying unreimbursed health expenses for the tax year 2020 in your 2020 tax return but you paid no PAYE/Income tax in that year, then there's no benefit to you. However you claim for unreimbursed qualifying health expenses incurred in 2021 in your 2021 tax return and you paid PAYE/Income tax in 2021, then it is a benefit to you.

Is there a paper version of submitting for medical expenses reimbursement?

If so, do you just fill in the medical receipts part only , as you have already sent through the details of your income and other expenses.

Or is it easier as others say above to go online and "Amend "

Tax relief for health expenses are claimed through the submission of a tax return or you can claim relief of them on an ongoing basis through the active tax year. It's an online process and has been for years.

If we click Amend or Request, do we just skip to the part where we add the medical expenses..ie- anything previously submitted is already saved,no need to add or re enter?

Are you amending a tax return that you already filed via your Revenue myaccount or are you filing a brand new one.

You should only see the amend option if you are amending one. You should only see the request one if you are filing a brand new one.
