Most underrated cities, towns, or villages in Ireland, north or south?

In June, during a bus tour of the Causeway Coast, we stopped for lunch in Ballintoy after the Giants Causeway and before the Dark Hedges. It is close to the larger town of Ballycastle and in the Fullerton Arms, where we ate, there is a wardrobe used as one of the dragon enclosures in Game of Thrones. (We didn't have time to see it though.)

What other towns, cities or villages on the island of Ireland do you feel are underrated?

Fethard / Fethard-on-Sea in Co. Wexford. Very fond memories of that whole area as a kid. Little beach is glorious but the general area is nicely picturesque , also there is a real relaxed way of life and tranquil vibe down there.

Naas. It’s rated but I still think underrated. Lovely place full of shops and a good pub restaurant scene. Good atmosphere and has its own vibe.

Monaghan town. Great little town, good Nightlife/restaurants and people are good craic. You never hear anyone saying anything good about it.

Athlone. I'd never been up to 3 months ago. Place is full of bars, restaurants, shops. 2 big shopping centres, the lake etc

Shopping centres killed the main street a bit, but seems to have everything you need. Id a few preconceptions about the place beforehand I must admit

I would concur, was pleasently surprised by it on my visit there a couple of years ago.

I plump for Wexford town. Has everything, including a great social scene, and easily accessible. The quay is one of the more under-rated settings in the country, and within a short distance of lovely beaches etc. Race-course, annual Opera festival, ferry port no length away-plenty of scope to develop into a must-go destination
