Deposit Refund

    Hi

I applied for a car finance. They approved my finance but without any info how much I need to pay. They told me to go to the dealer and see the car, eventually pay deposit. I payed 3.5k deposit and next day found out that the load interest was too high and decided to withdraw the application. I was informed by the lender to return to dealer for refund. The dealer pointed on a A4 printed paper on the wall that deposits are not refundable which nobody told me nothing. I was never briefed before paying deposit. There is no emails, no documentation or term and conditions from dealer. The only thing is the card machine receipt and hand written paper invoice with dealer stamp. The dealer didn't replied on email. What should I do?

Apply for a chargeback on the card used to pay the deposit.

Did you not have to sign a contract when paying the deposit? This seems a bit odd. Is it a main dealership or one of the dodgy Long Mile Road type of garage?

I suspect you may not be Irish. Get an Irish friend and go back and get your deposit back. I assume you didn't sign anything?

Deposits are not refundable unless stated or unless conditions are attached. And neither is a signed document required.

You paid the deposit in order to secure the car and prevent the person selling it to someone else.

You could argue that the terms were not made clear or that the dealer pushed you to make the deposit but its not a guarantee of success. You could also check elsewhere for finance including credit unions and any of the banks.

And also try the chargeback route on your card.

For anyone looking at making a deposit - make it small. But if not stated that it is refundable, a deposit is NOT refundable

Why would the dealer not keep the deposit? You contracted with him to buy the car - your arrangements with the finance company are a separate issue.

Hopefully, next time you inform yourself on the terms of the loan you've applied for, before splashing out.
