Offal/5th Quarter!

Why is there no visible lobbying for an Offal Payment for Irish farmers? Is there no profit being made from it by the meat factories?

We spend 2 yrs trying to double / triple the weight and then get nothing for 40 to 50% of it. That hardly makes sense ,especially in our newly preferred circular economy!!!

What we have at the minute is a linear lobbyless loss of a system affecting thousands of farmers specialised in producing fantastic beef.

This came to me today as I was explaining live weight and dead weight to someone.

I'm sure the topic has been up before.

I know people are admirably reticent in posting to some of my discussions since I/We hit the headlines with the Imported Slurry thread last Christmas!!!!

Still, I would like to read some comments to get a better understanding of the Industry.I can't leave ye off the hook that easy.........

It will inevitably be factored into the price that the factory is willing to pay per head. Start taking money specifically for offal and they'll have less money going on carcasse weight

The gap between ourselves and the UK shows we aren't even been paid for carcass weight let alone offal

Irish farmers will be paid whatever the beef baron decides, and they will be glad for it.

Until the beef processing monopoly is broken up don't expect anything to improve for the farmer - the issue isn't what market will pay, the issue is that 1 man controls all beef processing and can set whatever price he likes.

The 5th quater from what I believe covers the cost of killing an animal. There is butchers I know that get cattle killed in various slaughter housed and the deal is the slaughter house gets the 5th quater. I don't know how accurate that is.I know if you are to buy a side of beef from most slaughter houses the charge is around 40 cent above base.

Around 2015 the hide alone was worth 80e to the processor and the rest was approximately the same. Then leather became lest desirable in the auto industry and it collapsed. The price of offal goes up and down for various reasons. China would have taken more offal than beef cuts. The factories don't take offal prices into consideration when setting the price for cattle. However a good supermarket buyer would use it as a bargain chip when doing deals with them.

7 or 8 years ago a lot of offal was picked up by c+d dog food and charging for it.

Most butcher's are sold out of offal by Saturday, nothing wasted now.

Butchers charging €400 to ready a heifer.

If only there was some sort of properly resourced regulatory body with thr power and will to do something about such a situation....

There are so many other things the powers that be seem to want to regulate.......
