Search on this forum and you'll get all the info you need. It is a very well discussed subject.

If you could wait for sales, I would. For example Rapha has a very good christmas sale.

Jackets wont generally be warm and waterproof (not sure exactly what water resistant is - it either lets in water or it doesnt).

unfortunately the inbuilt search on the vanilla software is pretty piss poor.

This forum will just recommend you a Galibier Mistral (which is not a bad choice). At RRP they are probably the best option for winter clothes

You can't search for anything on boards.

I've done well with gobik for gear. Have a great winter jacket from them. Galibier are good too as mentioned. You could do worse than join a club and buy their tried and tested gear also

If on a tight budget I've always found the Wiggle own-brand DHB gear consistently performs well for the money.

In days gone by Planet X used to have some very comfy and competitively-priced gear but it seems to have completely dried up since Brexit.

    Galibier very good pound-for-pound too.

I'm going to say Galibier, who are honest enough to say water resistant rather than waterproof, and focus on keeping you warm.

imho, you won't get warm and reasonably priced and waterproof. To get waterproof and breathable (so you're not going to get as wet from sweat anyway) don't tend to be "reasonably priced".

FWIW - i hate tights with shammy in them - always preferred my regular shorts with any pair of cheapo roubaix bib tights over them. Much more never been cold with roubaix tights over regular shorts. Winter jackets - waterproof will be sweaty, the more you pay the less sweaty to an extent, but you will still be damp from the inside out.

I have a decathlon xc windproof jacket that does great for winter (both road and MTB), also have a cheap aldi windproof jacket that is also good, especially for the 15 or so quid i paid for it. A decent base layer is essential though.

velotech winter gear was waterproof to a point, kept dry for first few hours of a prolonged wet spins 3-5 hours then a sponge, hence water resistant i would describe them as

Anyone here try Torm? Their base layers are really good imho. As are the long sleeve jerseys. Bit pricier than Galibier.

you can search, it's just not very intuitive.

    1. Click the search icon and put in "Winter"
    2. On the results page click on "Discussions" - this will now give the option of filtering by category
    3. Choose "Cycling" in the categories field and filter
    4. Profit

unfortunately you can't AFAIK search within an individual thread, which you could with vBulletin. actually you can by further filtering on the "Title" of the thread you want to search. example

Ekoi have a seriously impressive range of kit. And they constantly have sales. I haven't tried their shorts/ tights/ jackets yet, but any other stuff I've got from them has been pretty good quality. Anyone else have experience?

Plus one for Galibier - don't think they can be beaten anywhere for price v. quality. Excellent customer service too.

Victory Chimp stuff is great, and like Galiber Irish, but its another price bracket up from Galibier.

I found google to be far more effective and easier, if you want the most recent threads, put in the year as well.

As above, galibier for the quality and supporting Irish. And as someone earlier mentioned, local club would be worth working with

I'd have to say Galibier as well. It's just hard to beat the quality and value for money. Mistral jacket is a class piece of gear

How does Galibier size, are they Italian or Irish sized.. huge difference in many brands .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,556 ✭✭✭Macy0161

trust the size charts! Sizing will normally say race fit or relaxed too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,022 ✭✭✭Paddigol

The sizing is pretty accurate - only thing I've found is that the arms on long sleeve tops are a tiny bit short for me. Not so much that I don't wear the gear, just a little bit noticeable on occasion, the odd draft etc. But no fear of Italian skin tight sizing from my experience (don't think I've bought any of their race fit stuff).

If I could thank this twice, I would. This is a huge development, and should avoid having to use other search engines to find stuff.
