BMW F11 - Scary experience with smoke from engine compartment

Had a scary moment with my 520D Touring today, having just pulled into my driveway after a short journey.

All of a sudden, there was smoke in the cabin and I immediately evacuated the family. There was a crazy amount of smoke coming from the front of the car and I expected to see a fire when I lifted the bonnet.

Recorded a video of what I saw:

Does anyone know what the hell might have happened here?

Even though you can see a leak in the engine compartment, it didn't smell like burning oil.

One thing I didn't notice at the time, but you can see it in the recording, is that the smoke wasn't continuous - it came in waves.

Two pieces of info that might be related -

1 - This car has been into the BMW dealership twice as part of the EGR cooler recall a couple of years ago.

2 - Just yesterday I was reading fault codes from the car - due to a check engine light - and it looks like I need a new exhaust gas pressure sensor.

These are the codes I found:

258700 Exhaust gas pressure sensor, diesel particulate filter, signal: Too low

290900 Air mass system: Measured air mass too high (Exhaust gas pressure sensor before turbine faulty (in conjunction with the fault codes 27B900 and/or 4C83 and/or 28DE00 and/or 4990).

28DE00 Exhaust backpressure sensor before turbocharger, signal: Dynamics implausible

2C2200 Coolant temperature sensor upstream of low temperature EGR cooler, coolant
temperature, signals: implausible with each other

Have you breakdown assist on your insurance policy? If so, call them out to check it

Not a mechanic, but I have had a similar problem with my 520 d.

    My guess….intake manifold problem.

When I had the EGR replaced on an X5 the mechanic found a small hole burned in a boost pipe. It had to be replaced as well.

I never noticed smoke but there was a definite smell in the cabin.
