Name That Bike...

Well, not really. I was looking at second hand bikes online (as you do), idly thinking I wouldn't mind buying an older road bike if I saw something cheap and nice.

Came across the bike below. The other photos show it as a Genesis Equilibrium 10, with Tiagra groupset.

The ad says it's aluminium frame, but am I wrong in thinking it's actually steel?

Any input appreciated

Secondly this Cannondale is quite close, the ad lists it as a Cannondale caad, but nothing else. I'm not adept enough to identify it (I have a hankering for a caad 10, not that I think this is one, more likely an optima, maybe?)

yep, all equilibrii have been steel - some with a steel fork but it looks like a carbon one on that.

Yeah, the Genesis was my choice of the two, as well. Think it's a 2013 model. I know prices are all over the place for bikes at the moment, but anyone care to venture what they think would be a reasonable price?

i sold an equilbrium 20, several years ago for €600ish i think. that's lower spec and the market has fallen, so i suspect €300-400ish?

that said, i haven't been following the market so that's a total guess.

I picked up a Genesis Croix De Fer recently for €300. Looks like the original version from 2009/10. It had been listed on DD at €800 originally and gradually fell to €400. In perfect shape, looks like it was hardly ever ridden. Bargain I think. Only negative is that the brakes are poor, cables might need tweaking - mechanical disc. Planning to take it from Maynooth along the Royal Canal back to Cloondara on Thursday then by road back home to Boyle.

The Irish market, bar a bit of time over Covid, always has been poor value for sellers. I think €300 is good value if in good condition but in reality, they will be lucky to get €200 from anyone who knows the age and original value. I'd offer €250 for a quick sale.

BB7's are probably the best mechanical disc brakes, as both pads can be fully adjusted. Might be the cheaper BB5's or crap levers.

Few (admittedly subjective) reasons apart from price being suspiciously low for a well-regarded frame decked out with at least some Dura Ace components. In general it seems like the seller doesn't know the bike at all, which would be unusual for someone buying a frame like this - it's not an entry level aluminium triple used for going to the shops after all.

1. Virtually zero details about the bike apart from being described as "lovely"
2. No Cannondale SuperSix owner ever referred to their bike as a Super 6, that's unforgivable!!
3. No mention of value-added components such as that nice DA9000 chainset.

Lazy seller or someone moving on a bike they know nothing about other than what they read from the frame?

I've run up against a few very dodgy sellers recently - maybe this is legit but I'd have suspicions.

[Edit: rethinking….maybe 590 is a realistic price for a 10spd carbon-framed well-regarded model with some fancy bits]. Poor guy!

It does look like the original Super Six though, so that is a 14 to 16 year old frame, with external routing. Looks in good nick but I don't think 590 is a terrible price, just odd, most would put 550 or 600. The market is saturated and this sellers best bet is someone who doesn't know bikes, googles Super Six and thinks it is far newer than it is.

To be fair, on the basis that it looks well maintained and has some upgraded parts, €500 is a good price for a solid winter bike and one that won many a TdF stage IIRC. This said, a bike is only worth what people will pay, so at the minute, it is only worth €300. Personally I am not a fan of the colour scheme. If he had it in the Liquigas colours I'd have put in an offer but that black / white overlay looks like a magic eye trick gone wrong.
