Recent promotion from a decent point on CO scale. Loathe new department and realise how good I had it back in the old place.Would I be mad to demote myself ? Value happiness over the extra money and could always get promoted again but looking for some advice/opinions maybe people who’ve been in similar situations.

    thanks.

New grade jitters, don't worry about it.

Happens to almost everyone. You go from being a big fish in your relatively small pond to suddenly not knowing anything and being helpless. Then you get your wageslip and you start thinking "what have I done this for? For an extra 30 quid a week!!!?!!"

I moved from being the longest serving officer in the facilities team of one PSB to leading a team of 4 desk-bound COs in another, wasn't even a promotion, just a sideways step and remained an EO. No extra money, no perks from being there so long and knowing the system, kept getting lost in the new place and everything. Just a total disaster of a start, especially when I'd known the previous building like the back of my hand.

Had a mini freakout after 4 weeks and called the old HR guys to request a move back. They talked me out of it, thankfully, and haven't looked back since.

I've seen it happen to loads since. Don't sweat it.

I agree with Yeah Right … new grade, new section, new Dept … it's a lot to process at once. I had a similar experience when I got HEO promotion - moved Dept, working in a section I felt way out of my depth in, and had a bunch of staff reporting to me. It was a lot and I was a total basket case for the first few months. I definitely wanted to revert but I am glad that I didn't.

If I could go back to myself then, I would tell myself to relax and that nobody is expecting you to know everything at once, so be patient with yourself.

Also remember, while you have a responsibility to do your job and do what your manager tasks you, your manager has a responsibility to you, especially during probation, to help support you, teach you, and get you through that first year. Speak to them about your concerns - it is part of their job to listen.

Give yourself a bit more time to try settle in, and see how youy are. And remember, no job is forever - you can transfer, get a promotion, section changes. Best of luck with whatever you decide.
