Vintage Automatic Gearbox Problem / Repair

    Hello all,

Newly registered but have lurked for a while now.

    I have a 98 VW T4 Auto.

I love the bus but it recently stopped finding reverse. It still does randomly, and normally after a longer drive, but I generally get nothing or a slight backwards movement. The occasional miracle makes me think it's likely an oil or sump tray issue rather than anything mechanical, but I'm pretty clueless with most of this stuff.

Not a single local mechanic will look at it, nor will the national gearbox specialists as it's over 20 years old. A previous thread talked about two garages in Tallaght and Little Island, both are too busy at the moment.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm needing to either sell it or live in it very soon (between homes)

    Thanks,

    Joe

No good news for you I`m afraid , this era automatic box did give problems and were difficult to repair successfully . I think you will be very lucky to have some one repair it here. You might have a better chance in the UK but likely to be expensive . There is some information on UK T4 forums about similar problems .

Oh that doesn't seem promising 😕

Frustrating thing is that this problem happened a couple of weeks after buying it from a private seller on donedeal.

Did you get this sorted? A mechanic told me a while back that Burnside garage up in Coleraine are worth a shout. I had problems with an autobox from an '87 car. They didn't do the job in the end as they hadn't the special tools needed but with yours being a bit newer they might be able to sort you out

Is it worth just changing the gearbox oil and hope that sorts it? Not much lost if it doesn’t work

This is water. Inspiring speech by David Foster Wallace https://youtu.be/DCbGM4mqEVw?si=GS5uDvegp6Er1EOG

Join all the various Facebook groups and ask for help with photos, videos, model numbers etc.

Eircooled is a group on Facebook with a website and forum etc. I assume they dont really cover newer stuff but may be able to print right direction. In reality a whole new/different gearbox may be easier to source and install than removing and actually fixing old one. It may be specialized tools and special parts no longer made. You need to be 100% certain of actual gearbox type and what you are buying to replace it. Scrap yards may help but it's a gamble too.
