Questions about Cadetships

    Hi all,

I am considering applying for two cadetships down the road, one in the Air Corps, and one in the Army Engineering Graduate Programme. I was wondering if any of you could answer a few short questions I have so I can make a more informed decision.

I understand cadets predominantly live in the barracks during their 17 month cadetship, however I have a few questions regarding the next steps of training and whether or not the young officers can live at home after their commission but during their subsequent training:

    1. In regard to the Air Corps, I see there is an element of 12-15 months of Flight Training in Baldonnell following your commission. My question is are officers undergoing flight training required to live in the barracks, or are you permitted to live at home and leave in the evenings and weekends? (I’m assuming this training occurs Monday-Friday).
    2. In a similar vein, with the Army Engineering Graduate Programme you undertake a similar Young Officers Training in the School of Military Engineering (SME), does anyone know where this school is located, and whether at this point officers are required to live in the barracks at this school, or are permitted to go home in the evenings and at the weekend (Again I assume this training occurs Monday-Friday?).
    3. Also in regard to the Army Engineering Graduate Programme, following your commission you are assigned to a unit. How does unit selection work? Do you list your preferences or will you be assigned randomly? What are the potential units that engineers can be assigned?

A few questions there but if anyone has any idea I’d really appreciate some insight so I can make an informed decision before I apply next year. Thanks!
