Fireplace widening

I'm looking to see if I can widen my fireplace if the lintel is long enough

I've knocked about an inch and half of concrete from the wall to try and find the lintel and hit what looks like a concrete wall with bits of pebbles etc in it (inside of the fireplace is covered in concrete and haven't touched that yet)

Is it likely the whole fireplace is this concrete mix? There's a wall at the back of the property with the same type of material. If so will abandon the widening as it would be a nightmare to knock away this
