What are ye're opinions on the Volvo V40.

    Around 2014 - 2016.

I don't do loads of millage. So, probably would be better with petrol.

Currently have am 08 1.4 Golf.

I like the overall look of the Volvo and standard Spec seems okay.

What are they like for reliability?

    Open to other suggestions to.

I’ve sat in them and drove them a little bit. They are nice cars. All Jap imports I think. The automatic ones at least.

It's basically has Mk3 Ford Focus underpinnings. 1.6 petrol engine is a Ford ecoboost engine. I'd be careful of the automatic version though, I think that's a Ford Powershift gearbox which are known to be problematic and expensive to fix. Rear legroom is tight and headroom is low so not ideal if you or passengers are above average height.

    Alright good to know thanks.

Rarely have anybody in the car apart from my mother and father rarely. So, leg room, etc wouldn't be an issue.

We had one for 8 years (D2 diesel 1.6 which in that generation are ok) and no issues with it. Was hard to beat the spec alright ..ours had led drl, digital speedometer and blonde leather seats which made it feel premium inside. Eventually just outgrew it with the kids getting bigger so while space is not massive in the back we rarely had adults in it but no complaints when we did.

Just google volvo v40 auto problems and see if anything comes up . I know nothing about just going by a comment about ford auto transmission by someone else

It's something like this I'm looking at. Not sure about the dealer.

As nice as it is I'd still be very concerned around the reliability of the Powershift automatic gearbox.

    Thanks,

Do nearly all the automatic petrol Volvo's have it?

Had a 2016 V40 2 litre D from new just sold it this year for a Octavia needed more boot space. It was the 6 speed manual. Had no real trouble with it would break an odd spring on the front maybe my driving style on back roads ! Very comfortable car and always enjoyed driving it. Bit heavy on the front end which made it sore on front tires. Also had very good fuel mileage, cant comment on the petrol versions.

From my reading, all the automatic 1.6 petrol V40s have the Ford ecoboost engine and powershift gearbox. It was only when they switched to a Volvo made 2.0 litre engine from 2016 onwards that they used a different automatic gearbox.
