Newbie: charging PS3 controllers

    Hi,

Apologies for the ignorance of this question, I just picked up a PS3 for my kids.

Its great, amazing how something so old can have such great graphics.

It came without manuals tho.. so I'm a bit in the dark on a coupla things.

Im wondering about charging the controllers.. it came with a grey cable which I can connect to the PS3 to charge one controller at a time.

But I tried charging with a USB mini cable on my laptop , as soon as I connected the controller to the laptop, it caused the PS3 to turn on, then crash.. and the controller just started flashing lights..

So, I presume thats not the way to go about it.. I googled and saw that the cable has to be a data cable (which it was) connected to something that does data (laptop?) .. so am confused now…

Can I get some sort of dock that will allow me to put the controllers in to it when the PS3 is off. Like, have the controllers ready to go when the kids are…

I saw one on ebay that looked cheap.. a gamestop one? But dunno.. would that cause mayhem like when I use a non-sony cable or what?

Thanks in advance for helpful comments.

I always charged my PS3 controllers connected to the PS3 while it is turned on. (The ability to charge from the console while in rest mode only started with PS4)

I actually connected my PS3 up last week for the kids and re-discovered this point. If possible let the kids play for a little with the controller plugged in. Then once it's charged you can disconnect it and charge the 2nd.

I have no experience of charging docks or trying to use any other device to charge the controllers.

PS. I have to agree with you comment about how good it looks. I thought it was going to be painful to play those old games but they all feel so "modern", they are not retro at all.
