Installed charger last year- now looking to build garage for elec car other end of house. Can charger be moved, or extended.

I'm thinking install new cable opposite end of house and get zappi re-wired. Leave existing wiring as is Capped off. Would that be very expensive do you think??

Depends on length and complexity of cable route really, more info needed!

Fuse box would be approx 40 metres from garage, only complex part will be feeding cable into loft/attic through soffits and fishing it through for a neat job.

Thanks for responding much appreciated. My fear is it will be expensive as I think the cable required is quite dear.

By the time I'm finisheded digging out and laying foundation, buying the garage, then fitting of zappi.....am I mad.

My origional thought was it would be best to charge car under a roof for the winter and would help protrct the battery

6mm SWA cable for 40m, the cable alone is probably the guts of €200. But assuming you'll want lights/sockets in this garage too, so a larger cable prob required - 10mm sq cable would prob double the price.

If you have to dig/duct underground that's going to cost more obviously. You could run the cable yourself if an electrician is happy for you to do that. Add the cost of labour and certs on top and it starts to add up - but at least you have the charger/MCB/isolator already there though, just need to relocate some parts.

Are you just building the garage to charge the car indoors? I've never heard of needing to do that in order to protect the battery.

I installed my Zappi on the outside wall of my garage last year. The original 6mm sq. cable feeding the garage wasn't strong enough for the Zappi, so it had to be upgraded. I future provided it and went with 16mm sq. in case I put in a heat pump / solar in the future.

I did the trenching and electrician supplied / fitted the 25m long cable between the consumer unit in the house and the consumer unit in the garage for €800. €1,400 then for new Zappi (before €600 grant applied).

Thanks lads, yes starting to add up, maybe I'll leave it.

Yes Rob, I was looking to house car, a friend was saying he got a lend of electric car couple years ago, to go home for Christmas, came out to a very frosty morning-after charging car all night had 500km estimate. He put on heating to warm car and defrost-when he returned with kids to load up car was down to 280km and needed to charge again on way home, because of that he said he'd never buy electric.

    This will be my first full winter and I always wanted a garage- But;

    Steel garage €6,400

Ground works €3.700 return visit to insulate and damp course.

    Electric works?? Pos; €2,000

    Total: €12,100. It's a bit mad.

6mm Sq. Is the normal, would there be issues with voltage drops over 40mm with it?

Just preheat your EV using cheap night rate electricity and it’ll be warm and toasty each morning. (Assuming your EV has remote heating which most have)

I'm not an electrician, but 6mm Sq. was what I had to take out and replace, based on the recommendations of a RECI. 6mm sq seems to be normal for domestic work (lighting, sockets).

32 amps over 40m on a 6mm sq cable would be pushing close to the volt drop limit alright (4% drop allowed). If the plan is to add lights and sockets on that circuit in the shed, increasing the load, then the next cable size up would be recommended.l at the very least.

Cables are selected based on the expected current and volt drops and installation methods. Rule of thumb in domestic setting is 1.5 for lighting, 2.5 for sockets, 6mm for EV chargers, Cookers etc but it all depends on the particular installation.

Its a bit mad alright, agreed! Your car will be fine outside. I think your friend might be exaggerating the range loss a little there!

I don't know what you drive, but I can preheat the car via the mains charger if plugged in and not affect the range! I've never had that issue before.

yes but 40m is a bit more than the typical domestic install
