Hi, one of my sons is 20, two years named driving on my policy, one in his own name, 1.1 engine, 9 year old car. Quotes average €1,400 which is not unexpected. However friends son is 23, one year named driving, one in his own name and drives an older 1.6 engine car. His quote is just under €700. Are premiums higher because my son is under 21, that’s what I think but can’t find anything online.

Age can be a factor, how long they've there licence, type of car, address, etc.

Type of policy, have they a black box, etc.

I started driving in 1986. My insurance was £1520.

    €1400 is an absolute bargain.

Insurers will certainly charge a 20 years old male driver higher than a 23 year old with one year named driver insurance AND one year full no claims in his own name.

The engine size is not as important as you might think. It's the car itself.

A 1.2L car that is seen as a favourite of boy racers will be a lot more expensive to insure that a 2.0l Volvo V60.

In year 2 and at 21 years old, that quote would probably be 25% lower. (Assuming no claims)

He has tried everyone online and of course no quote given, but a call back. One more year of pain

Ring them, the online calculators are not going to have much leverage for individual experience at that age.

Is he on Revolut? They also do a young drivers insurance with an in car gadget that tracks your driving, not a black box, you just stick it in the charger socket. They have some way of rewarding good driving

A 9 year old car could be an issue also.

make model of car is an issue too.

My eldest start in a Clio 1.1, whilst #2 started in a 1.4 Astra. Astra's are 'not cool' and are a lower premium than (say) Polo, Golf, Focus etc.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
