Tyre problem

Anybody know what might have caused this ? The centre of the tyre has protruded about a quarter of an inch above the rest of the tyre for around 6 to 8 inches in length

The car is a Skoda Karoq and the tyre was on the rear drivers side

Any idea how old the tyre is? Just looks like structural failure due to age IMHO.

Either it hit something or was driven flat.

I suppose it is possible that it had a manufacturing fault, but unlikely.

That should have been changed long ago! It's perished so it could be anything that caused it, a pothole or just the fact it's perished.

The tyre is four years old according to the markings on it but it's only on the car just over a year and a half

Its a Dunlop Sportmax and there's no more than 20k miles on it.

It's my son's car and he only noticed it today

Seems low enough mileage but it depends on the driving and I'm not familiar with that car, Dunlop do test tyres sent back through distributors for manufacturing faults if you wanted to go to the effort.

As said, it's perished anyway. Probably hit something at some stage, and drive on it flat. It looks like the thread depth is pretty low too.

That type of damage is usually caused by water incursion in to the structure of the tyre. The water gets in to the steel belts parts of the belts weaken allowing what you see.

Water ingress can be caused by poor quality puncture repair, impact damage etc

You would feel this driving as it creates massive vibration.

As others have said that tyre looks pretty poor for 20k.

Manufacturing fault is possible but you would need to get the thing sent back for a test. If a fault is found they give you a credit based on the remaining tread depth...which is not much to be fair. Probably not worth the hassle.

Some of the threads have busted in that spot, much higher chance of blowout, also be noisy on road

Why would anyone be bothered about a tyre that should have been changed miles ago anyway?

Honestly that tyre isn't the problem the problem is the person thats only just noticed it.

Wake me up when it's all over.
