Calendar invites and no notification (I lost out on a potential job)

Hello all,
To cut a long story short - I had been waiting on an invite to the 3rd and final stage of a process for a job I wanted (unemployed). Had been keeping my eyes peeled on email, and i'm also often in and out of my calendar app for a good week or so beforehand.
On Wednesday I get a call from the VPs assistant about my interview and where I was. First I heard of it.. turns out calendar invites on Google silently go to calendar app, and nothing appears in GMail inbox for you to accept/decline, or even be informed.
Arrrgh.
I've played around with a few settings on calendar app in phone, and also on calendar.google.com. I still can't get any notifications to occur.
P.S. I emailed twice after the fact, explaining the issue, which they ignored. Only to receive a boilerplate rejection email from the hiring manager. It was a niche role, and I don't think there many in the process. Annoying, but not the end of the world.
