Looking forward to seeing how this goes. Really liked Joe as a presenter on OTB, he was the only reason I held on to my subscription with them as long as I did.

Hopefully being tied to the Irish Independent doesn't hinder them too much when it comes to the contributors. I like how Second Captains have the freedom to have the likes of Gavin Cooney from the 42.ie, Jonathan Wilson from the Guardian, Miguel Delaney from the Indo, Maurice Brosnan from the Examiner all on the podcast in a week. I doubt Joe will be allowed to have contributors from rival media outlets. That being said the Indo contributors are decent. I think Dan McDonnell is an excellent person to have lead the football contributions and he has a good rapport with Joe already from his OTB days. I quite like Colm Keys, John Greene Michael Verny and Ruaidhri O'Connor as well who they've said will be on the show this week.

Regarding a paywall I'd imagine it will be quite a while before we see one. If/when we do I'd expect they'd try to follow the Second Captains lead rather than OTBs. I get the impression Joe was not happy with how the OTB subscription service was launched and if he's putting his name in the title of this podcast he won't want a repeat here.

What Second Captains did so well with their paywall is they built up an audience of around 200k weekly listeners before they tried to convert a small percentage of them to paid members. When launching it they were also offering something they weren't already providing for free. They replaced two free Thursday Irish Times podcasts with four paid podcasts Tuesday to Friday and kept the two Monday ones free as a hook.

In contrast OTB launched their subscription service on a couple of days notice and charged a tenner for a product worse than the one they had already provided for free. Basically they asked their listeners to pay a tenner to now listen to the previously free podcasts (which you could listen to on any podcasting app) on an app that barely functions. It's baffling a year after launch OTB don't have a personalised RSS feed for subscribers, one of the basics of podcasting. Their app is so poor that even when I tried to subscribe I couldn't and ended up subscribing via youtube.

Overall it's great to have extra competition in Irish sports podcasting. It should force Second Captains not to be too complacent and OTB to maybe improve their quality. OTB are blessed RTE radios midweek sports programming has been so bad for so long or they would be in real trouble.

Was never a fan of Conan when he was on with Wooly so hoping hes not a regular, solid start anyway

Decent first couple of episodes. Great to hear Ronan Mullen will be joining as a producer. He was always very good on OTB before he left. Has a good eye for a story and had a good relationship with Joe whenever they were on air together.

Great start by Joe. Interesting interview with Paul O'Connell on Tuesday. Looking forward to Ruari O'Connor, Dan McDonnell and Damien Delaney being regulars.

First time I've heard him, not a fan so far. Unfortunately seems like he will be a regular at the start of each pod.

Timestamps on yesterday's show - gamechanger for me personally

the volumes on Thursday's episode were all over the place, had to turn it off. Joe would be talking and it seemed like he just started leaning away from the mic as his sentence went on. The Norse lad would come in then with a much louder mic. Made for an awful listen in the car

The intro is a bit odd where you can hear them preparing to go live. It's like they forgot the edit it out and it makes for a limp start. Have to agree that the chit chat with Conan needs to be retired as soon as possible. Seems a lovely lad but not for a podcast.

I think that’s an intentional copy of The Overlap where they include 5 mins of chit chat at the start.
I don’t think it works in this scenario.

I don't want to take this thread off-topic but the start of the Overlap is Outrageous - who on earth wants to listen to a bunch of people talking all over each over while eating food. Disgusting.

Some teething problems for sure on the production. Notwithstanding the very obvious leave in of the preamble at the start, there is a very obvious edit needed from c26.30 on the Jonathan Wilson episode. Someone missed it.

The chit chat is crap. Who wants to listen to their boring production talk. Sort that sh1t out Indo

Yeah I'd agree. They mentioned it on one show to say it was deliberate, but it just feels like indulgent padding.

Conan's role is a bit strange - clearly not the host so I'm not quite sure why he is on each episode

I've listened to a good few episodes and I do like it. I feel the contributors are good and they've tried to cover quite a broad range. Quite a heavy focus on soccer - I thought the Irish stuff was interesting (big fan of Dan McDonnell) but the PL stuff is probably better covered by Irish pods. I'm interested to see how good the GAA and Rugby coverage is.

I was hoping this might be better. I was definitely expecting much better with Joe Molloy involved.

The intro is nonsense with that off mic chat. It's not like it's funny.

Joe had better chemistry with the lads on OTB and the banter was just better, was actually funny at times.

I used to listen to Sports Joe before that Dan guy took over and ruined it, but I never warmed to Conan. Found him too straight and serious, I don't think there's any craic here with Joe. They need someone better to bounce off.

Decent start, but I wouldn't be paying for it, if it goes behind a paywall. Not when there's vastly superior free football pods like The Guardian and Totally Football. Agree that the intro is a bit painful.

Agree re the Conan fella-seems a nice lad but they need to lose him from the podcast.Decent enough start but wouldn't pay for it if it went behind a paywall.

Have listened to few podcasts, can take it or leave it.Hasnt been as good as I expected but might improve with time.

McGinley chat was brilliant. Shows how good an interviewer Joe is.

Listening to this after Second Captains feels very repetitive some days, guests with books out being interviewed on same days like Joe Canning and now Richie Hogan today. Both playing Rio's Ballon D'OR for Vinicius audio this week, reading the same email out from the same listener after one of the Ireland games and similar guests like Wilson.

Have to agree, there's a lot of repetition and I'm sure SC's are none too pleased a free podcast is muscling in on their turf. Having said that I'll continue to pay for SC's as it is the superior podcast.
