My kittens are around 5 months old now and eating plenty! I have been feeding them a mixture of Royal Canin wet and dry kitten food, but tbh, it's costing a fortune!

Am interested in what people are feeding their cats, would like something cheaper, but don't want to give them rubbish either!

    Thanks

Our fellow is 14.5 & a number of years ago in an attempt to save his teeth, after six or seven years of Whiskas pouches & Whiskas dry food, sometimes Felix, we switched him to Royal Canin dry food for fussy eaters. He loves it still although his teeth are gone now for over a year.

We tried all sorts of wet & dry food with him over the years but it was a bit of a waste with most for him. The cats in the recycling centre benefitted hugely though!

We get about six months out of the 10kg with him. It is expensive but upside for us is that there is absolutely no waste & as we have it delivered, no more heavy shopping bags either!

Royal Canin is premium priced medium quality food (excluding the specialized foods as those are hard in general to find alternatives for such as k/d etc.). My budget recommendation would probably be Animonda Carny and store it in the fridge between meals (nuke it for 10s when serving) with a lid on the can. You also have Catz, Wild Freedom, Purizon, Yarrah etc. Basically anything gran free because no matter what the commercials will tell you cats are carnivores and don't eat veggies… For dry once again Feringa, Wild freedom, Purizon, Yarrah or what I've used recently Taste of the wild all work but I tend to keep things in rotation to not bore my cats with only feeding one brand and flavour and stock up on the various sales.

We use Applaws wet food (70g tin split in 2 - half in the morning, half in the evening) and Purina Proplan dry food 1 small scoop per cat. They love the applaws but it is pricy. We try to buy in bulk as much as possible.

    10kg lasts 6 months?

God, maybe I'm feeding them too much...

FWIW A 3kg bag of dry food lasts about a month for us 2 cats plus wet food.

Lol! In or around six months. He has access 24/7 so it’s dictated totally by himself. As if it’d be any other way, regardless! He eats less during the summer months & is in great shape, beautiful shiny coat & weighs 6.4kgs currently.

My cats eat a selection of mono protein grain free wet foods, and the dry food is Orijen, which is also grain free, two varieties that I alternate once a week. Dry food comes in 5.4 kg bags, each costs around €65.

With two cats, two 5.4 kg bags of dry food last at least six months (€130 in at least six months, about €20/month).

for our 3 persians we feed them the dry food persian specific from royal canin, the 10kg bag would last a couple of months.

For our barn cats we feed them a mix of close to date meat that would otherwise be thrown out, mixed with remains of sunday roast etc, and also tesco wet food specifically the cans in gravy as they love it, along with the tesco dry food and occasional treat dry food. There are 3 adult and 2 kittens in the barn, they also eat a lot of rats and vermin, which they have adequate access to with farmland all around and our chicken feed and the chicken shed being close.

All healthy and happy with silky coats. Cats are usually quite intelligent as regards food (our persians excepted of course) and tend not to overeat especially in the wild.

I switched to Royal Canin wet and dry when mine was about 8 years old. She's now almost 13 and no regrets or complaints. That said, RC is very expensive and personally I wouldn't start it with kittens as you could be facing many years of big food costs along with the usual high vet bills. I'd recommend something between the low end Whiskas and the premium end RC for the first 7 or 8 years or so.
