Jilly Cooper on Disney, who would have thought 😄 looks a right 80s trashy ride, I'm sold

Watched the first 2 episodes, it's full of riding, even in the opening few seconds.

It took me a good 10 minutes to recognise Danny Dyer in it.

I cannot wait to watch this!!

My first teenage raunchy books were Jilly Cooper. Looking forward to it 😀

Myself and Emer sat down to watch this last night and lasted about 20 minutes before giving up; I'm not sure if this is because we are a pair of old grumps or because it was terrible…….but my guess is the latter.

Now Jilly Copper would never have been my go to choice of literature as a young warrior but I would admit to a bit of secret Harold Robbins reading from time to time so I'm not a complete square but I thought the vibe and approach with Rivals was all wrong. It reminded me of a cross between the bad bits of Are you Being Served and Dynasty with a bit of Blackadder thrown in every now and again. I wouldn't have been surprised had Lord Flashheart burst out at some stage shouting "Woof, Woof" with a wink to the camera.

Now I'm all for a bit of tongue in cheek (either cheek if you know what I mean, say no more!) but that only works if it's a comedy….and this isn't. I get that it's a send up, a pastiche, an ironic re-imaging of the excesses of the '80's, but there's still got to be characters and a story worth following; none of which I could find.

So, back to Mary Beard and the history of Roman Emperors for me and you can keep your Rivals out of sight; wink wink, nudge nudge..

…I feel much better now after that rant…..

Two episodes in and I like it a lot. I wasn’t expecting to. I said I’d give it a go based on what Louise Duffy mentioned yesterday about the soundtrack being great. It also has David Tenant and Catherine Parkinson so I figured it was worth a watch on their merits.

it really shouldn’t be my kind of thing but it really is very entertaining. Complete fantasy and very much brain off TV it’s great to actually get something like this. It’s a nice escape from some of the more serious shows doing the rounds. I think if you’re watching this as a serious drama, you’re watching it wrong.

I listened to an interview with Joan Collins the other week where she spoke about her time in dynasty. It got me thinking back to when shows like this were a staple. They have kind of died out now, replaced by things like Yellowstone which are largely the same but much more serious. Rivalso brings back some of that stupid plot/flippant character stuff. it’s a great bit of fun.

    I am loving it!

I'm guessing you haven't read any Jilly Cooper books, but that's exactly what they are! It's great and I have to say I'm loving Danny Dyer in it.

    Super fun.

God be with the days that was as close as I could get to porn 😂 I think Riders may have been the 1st "dirty" thing I ever read.

Finished it last night. I just wish there were more episodes! For anyone complaining, you should have stuck with it. The bonking took a back seat I felt in the final half and the drama took over. Great show all round. It’s the first time I’ve liked Danny Dyer in anything.

Wasn't nearly as much riding as in the books though #dissappointed 🤣

Yes the initial riding heavy storyline degenerated into a series of dramatic events and plot twists as the show went on. Utterly shameful and disgraceful really 😜

Veronica Smurfit will be on the Late Late Show tonight presumably promoting Rivals.

Really good show. Danny is good in this. Hopefully there will be a second series.

2 episodes in to my first bonkbuster. Very good. Lots of horrible b’stards.

I never considered myself to be remotely in the Jilly Cooper reading demographic and if you’d told me a month ago I’d be watching a JC adaptation and thinking it was one of the best shows of the year I’d have laughed. Now I’m trying to find the plot of the book and find out how it differs from the show. Even reading about some of the post end of TV series hook ups has me going “god that sounds shite” but it just shows how well they executed the tv series.

No spoilers (because I don’t have any really) but it sounds like the show finished about halfway through the book. I’m now curious whether they’ll finish rivals as a standalone show with season 2 or bring some of the follow on novel into the mix also. The follow on book is called Polo and from what I can see, cantered around a polo trainer and his stable. I’m guessing the spiel about showing Polo matches on Venturer will open the door to that world. I was afraid of the Gane Of Thrones effect setting in, I.e. early seasons with excellent detailed plot until they ran out of book and the show writers plots were far less interesting by comparison but it sounds like there’s plenty of material here and the showrunners might face a plan.

Only watched this as her indoors insisted on it , ended up really enjoying it , we lashed through it , A great cast , a great soundtrack and lots of humour , end maybe felt a little rushed/unresolved , will be interesting how they manage a second season.

The fella playing Rupert has a very weird face. Reminds me of your man from Lazy Tow

Great fun show although the last episode felt a bit all over the place by wrapping up the lingering storylines through the season.

The other half sat down to watch this so I fecked off out to the kitchen to do something else! I found myself glancing in at all the riding, then at the whacky characters and then by the end I'd been standing in the doorway for 20 mins utterly hooked! On the last episode today. What a great show. Great cast, great characters, awesome music!

I thought it was a great watch and had a few laugh out load moments for me. I'd watch David Tennant in anything. I thought Aidan Turner and Victoria Smufit's Irish accents sounded a bit heavy though.
