Overtaking by a Speedvan

Hi all, I was driving home from work yesterday, doing 90km in a 100km road with a line of cars behind me as traffic was quite bad. There was a tractor pulled into the ditch who pulled out in front of me last second and as a result I had to quickly slow and overtake him as braking too suddenly could have had me rear ended, passing him at around 80km. It was a safe spot to pass, with no cars coming toward me, but as i was getting past him I came into view of a speed van, and kept at 80km, I'm wondering if ill get any points for this

You didn't break the limit, why would you get points?

If you were doing 80km on a road with a speed limit of 100km, why would you think you might get points from a speed van?

Really? You've seen people get points for travelling at less than the speed limit?

Think OP might be concerned that they might get points related to the overtaking manoeuvre, and that's what they're referring to here - i.e. has heard of others getting points for a lesser offence than what they fear they may be cited for.

OP can relax. Speed vans are concerned with the speed limit only, and if he/she really was only doing about 80km/h in a 100km/h zone, then there's nothing to worry about.

Nothing to do with this thread (OP you were not speeding so you'll be fine) but a perfect place to give a shout out to them drivers out there that when they see a speed camera van ahead, proceed to slow down to about 30km/h below the posted speed limit for that particular road… just in case…

Subject line: Overtaking by a Speedvan

What did the speed van overtake?

No you haven't. Nobody got speeding points for travelling below the limit. Your thinking doesn't make any sense.

Speed vans only enforce speed limits; they don't monitor for or collect evidence of other traffic offences. It isn't impossible that the speed van operator (or some other witness) saw your overtake, believed that it was an offence, took down your reg plate, and made their own report to the guards, but it's extraordinarily unlikely, and even less likely that anything would come of it if they had, unless they happened to have video evidence. If a guard didn't see your manoeuvre firsthand and stop you then and there to issue a fine, you've most likely got nothing to worry about.

I ran past a speed van while smoking a joint, will they fine me I was running about 30km below the limit.

Speed vans do not enforce anything.

They simply digitally record the speed of every vehicle that passes the van.

The digital file is sent to gardai who then issue tickets to those over a certain level.

The person in the van simply sits back and monitors the equipment

Yesterday I had to brake in an 80 zone because of drivers overreacting to a speed van outside Liffey Valley.

When it was safe to look down speedo was showing 53Km/h.
