Hi all, possibly looking at iron upgrade next year.

Plan on getting fitted but Cobra Forged Tec and Tec X have peaked my interest so wondering if anyone has any experience of these ?

    thanks

Can't speak for them specifically but I did test the Titleist T150 and Srixon ZX5 mk2. They'd be in the same category of player's distance iron as the Cobras. The TM P770 and P790 also.

Ended up taking the ZX5s and they are brilliant for me tbh. I was very close to buying a T150/T200 combo set and it was just a touch pricey at the time. Took 4-PW ZX5 as I wasn't really feeling the ZX7 combo option. There was a deal for a matching driving iron. Ended up slightly cheaper than Titleist even with the 3i deal.

I'd recommend testing a few different options if you can. The new Callaway's and P7XX series seem to be getting good reviews too. Cobra irons, drivers and woods are often underrated imo. I don't think Bryson's whinging helped the brand at all. Some great value to be had.

Srixon irons seem to get great feedback

100% I changed from Mizuno JPX 921 forged and they're just an all round more consistent iron. The pro who I bought from has 4/5i zx5 and 6-PW zx7. Couldn't have had more praise, he was always a blade player until that point.

Personally I found that I have improved consistency with every iron and a little more distance also. The launch higher and stop better. Tbf I think I found the right options/combo from the fitter for my swing. It may not suit the next guy of course.

Big thing for me is that the v sole get's through the turf really well. I find I also get less of a flier from light or damp semi rough.

€1400 for 4-PW with project x shaft. That also included the new driving iron thrown in. I think that was a promotion deal, not sure if it's still available. I spec'd my build 4-PW on McGuirks and their price is €1500, no driving iron. The Titleist quote I had at the time was north of €1500 4-PW T200/T150 combo (different shaft).

Both cases I tried all the shafts and different options for combos eg ZX7 or even T100.

I have the Cobra Forged Tec. Got them last spring, and absolutely love them. Tried a few clubs, and it was between the Forged Tec and a Mizuno set, but i just preferred the feel of the Cobra. Lovely weight to them, and they look fantastic at setup. Got the 4i-PW, .5 extra length and 2" offset. Think it was around €1200 for the set, iirc.

I own a set of the ZX5 Mkii's and cannot fault them. Nice blend of looks, forgiveness and feel. If you can fit for them then I would definitely recommend them. I love them. Also worth mentioning my last set were a set of Cobra's too.

Picked up a set of Tec X with a nice discount

Got to love jacked lofts - average of 15 yards extra with 7 iron compared to my old one based on a very small sample size

Looking forward to trying on the course.

You are hitting a 6 iron with 7 stamped on the sole, not a lot to love

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,893 ✭✭✭alxmorgan

    Yes and no.

The 5 iron for example is loft of my old 4 iron

I don't use my 4 iron as I can't launch it. I can with this 5 iron (at least I could today)
So the new tech has changed it in that way.

The Golf Wedge Industry love Cobra because their 'pitching wedge' is 42 degrees (9 iron in old money) forcing people to carry 4 or 5 wedges just to fill the gap.

Very fair point. The gapping will be interesting as I had a 45 PW and a 50 GW
I doubt I'll change clubs. Probably just look to change swing on PW to fill the gap

I remember the days of a pw was 48-50 degrees. Should just change them to lofts instead of # iron but the marketing wouldn’t be as good

    100%!

I used to have a set of Cobras and the 5 iron was 21 degrees. For reference, I now have a Srixon Driving 3 Iron in the bag that is 20 degrees. The numbers are essentially meaningless.

You are launching it better due to the speed of the face, nothing to do with the jacked lofts, what brand and model was your old 4 iron?

I am not saying I am launching it better because of the loft - I am saying for a similar loft I am launching the new clubs better.

I am assuming weight distribution is also part of this but I am guessing hotter face is also part of story.

    In other words "tech" 😁

Yes higher launch and less spin than your old Mx200, faster ball speed due to the trampoline face. I was tempted by those Cobras but got the p790 instead, definitely the Cobras look better.

I was surprised how well they look given the target market of game improvement

They are relatively neat by the ball

Played a few holes yesterday and very happy with performance so far. Very easy to get them in the air.

Towering ball flight. They may spin less but the height of the flight will hopefully mean stopping power still there. Course was soft of course so hard to tell now.
