Why does Google Maps keep suggesting routes with road closed?

For the actual driving, I use an independent sat nav app, but for initial planning and very occasionally for very last minute directions to a specific address I use Google Maps. In recent months, though, I've been getting no end of suggestions to follow a route where the road is closed. Google knows it, tells me about it, and then advises that there are "No other routes available" when of course there are. WTF is this all about?

From today's quick look at the first half of a trip I'll be making through France on Wednesday:

That D924 route is the logical one : a pretty straight north-south run from where I am to where I need to be - toll-free, avoids Paris, and as indicated shorter and faster than the suggested alternatives. So why is Google deliberately suggesting, longer, more expensive routes that are (seemingly) impossible?

This is why "AI" will never take over the world.
