I have made great use of Thom's and used the open shelf access in Pearse Library. Pre covid the research room was open all day on a Saturday and this suited me. Now I see they are open three days Tue/Wed/Thurs and by appointment. Also one can only request to view 5 items per visit. Do you think this will apply to the Thom's editions? I would like to browse c 100 yrs.

I think probably they're just open access and it won't apply but best to pop them an email to check.

Very frustrating reduction in services there.

It's not just frustrating - it's a shocking waste of a wonderful resource.

And an insult to Mr Gilbert who gathered up so much material. I so enjoyed a day on there on a Saturday … no closing for lunch and decent coffee or soup to be had in the cafe where sun streamed in and one could read the odd newspaper left there. It is closed now….and I could park for the day nearby!

Good response from Pearse Library… 40 minutes to reply to my email this afternoon.

No item limit applies to Thom's Street Directories and all other books on the open shelves in the Reading Room (DCC Minutes and Reports, Calendar of Ancient Records, Dictionary of Irish Biography etc.)

What is new is a requirement to use lockers for personal items.

It's ages since I've been in there. Lovely library, and the coffee shop was a great treat after pouring over the volumes.

Coffee shop is long gone, but I also have very fond memories of spending Saturdays there when I was in college and later. It was one of the only places open outside working hours. I used to use the bmd indexes on microfilm and prep lists for the GRO and then go there when I next had a weekday opportunity.
