I have a week off coming up and was looking around for some last minute deals (it's next week). I chanced pigsback.com and found Ballyliffin Hotel in Donegal have a very good deal from €65 per room per night. I have just booked 4 nights B&B for 2 people for €266 total so €66.50 per night. I mean, in this day and age that is a serious bargain!

The Inishowen Peninsula has been on my list to visit so I am looking forward to it. We can visit Malin Head, Derry, Fort Dunree, plenty of beaches, etc.

We are going mid-week but there is no mention of weekends versus midweek. To get this price you must be staying at least 3 nights but they have a similar deal for a 2 night stay.

    Deal: https://www.pigsback.com/classic-ballyliffin-stay-near-the-beach-ballyliffin-hotel-ireland/sale-hotel

Hope all goes well. I'm just a cynic.

could be just a pragmatic business strategy that having guests in the hotel midweek off season would lead to ancilliary income from the bar and restaurant which you dont have if you have empty rooms.

That is a serious bargain altogether, be interested in any places worth visiting or stopping off at en route as we are heading to southern Donegal next month.

Probably getting a few last minute quid before they convert it for our newly arrived doctors and engineers.

If you've a nice day on the way, the walk up to the Grianan of Aileach is well worth it, you'll be driving right by (my Dad's from Inishowen)

Great shout @Electric Nitwit we've been there before a few years ago but it would definitely be worth another stop off on a clear day! If you have any other local insights, let me know - maybe this should be in the travel forum now lol

That's a serious bargain. Lovely hotel.

Hopefully you'll get some dry weather. Some beautiful beaches nearby for walks, pop into Derry for the day.

How long will that price last now that it's gone general release on Boards?

Well so far I don't think anyone else has booked it so you're safe enough 😁

They have Ballyliffin Lodge for €75 a night too, although fewer dates available and the room occupancy is 2 adults(vs 2 adults & 2 infants in Ballyliffin Hotel)

    €93 with a spa treatment.

It's a great wee hotel. I stayed there several times when playing golf in Ballyliffen,

The Lodge is a nicer hotel, but both are worth a stay at those prices.

Had a great room, stay and breakfast in the Ballyliffin Hotel before. Very handy location for touring around the county.

Great memories of The Ballyliffin! Would choose it over The Lodge any time. It is nice too & I have stayed there a few times but there’s something about The Ballyliffin. Used to be another nice hotel down the shore road, near the beach but it closed some time before Covid, I think. It was another place with a great feel to it.

The 3rd hotel was the Pollan Beach Hotel, closed around the time of the financial crash I think.

Had arguably the best location of all the Ballyliffin hotels.

Yes! We stayed Mon-Friday last week and got the most amazing weather, it was a fantastic trip! Donegal really is beautiful. The hotel staff were all amazing, very friendly and welcoming. Funny enough someone above mentioned renovations - the floor we were staying on were having a few rooms painted but aside from a slight smell of paint in the corridor, there were no interruptions or signs except that it was probably quieter than normal with fewer people on our floor. The room was big enough with a double and single bed. I'd imagine it was one of the rooms that were yet to be painted/redecorated as it was a bit dated but that doesn't bother me. We had a nice big bathroom with walk in shower. No shortage of hot water in the taps or for showers. The breakfasts were self service, there were cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit, toast, tea coffee, and a selection of hot foods to choose from and fill your own plate - sausage, rashers, mushrooms, beans, fried egg, scrambled egg, grilled tomatoes and hash browns. No more, no less, same items every morning 😊

They also serve meals in the bar in the evenings and we ended up eating there 3 out of the 4 nights, partly for convenience but the food was fine and the service was good if a little slow. All in all for what we paid, we got a super bargain and I'd recommend it. Ballyliffin is a small village with 4 big hotels in it, it's a great spot for visiting anywhere on the Inishowen Peninsula. I'll post a couple of pics later.

Another reason for eating in the hotel is that a lot of places have stopped their summer hours and are only open on weekends which obviously didn't suit us so something to look into if you end up going.

You certainly got an amazing spell of weather for your trip, and of course it makes any part of Ireland much nicer when the sun is shining.

Yip, Ballyliffin is a lovely little spot for touring around Inishowen. Afaik one of the hotels is used solely for Ukrainians.

    Our room

Nearest beach was Pollan Strand, about 3-4 mins away in the car

And another nearby beach which I hadn't seen mentioned anywhere but we visited because it was nearby and a horseshoe shape so more sheltered than Pollan - Tullagh Strand.

I won't bore you with the rest of my pics as there are many but it's a short enough spin to anywhere on the Inishowen Peninsula from the hotel including Malin Head which was stunning in the sun. I'd imagine it's wild and fantastic in the less pleasant weather too 😊

Hope you got to visit the Isle of Doagh also. Spectacular dunes. Beautiful to look from but also to look at from the route to Malin.

Thanks for the recommendations and snaps!

    Anyone else been up lately?

Heading up soon, looks like there's 4 slow EV chargers nearby that'll be handy. EV network looks pretty scarce in Donegal still.

We also have an EV but topped up at Letterkenny on the way up and that was enough to get us around the peninsula for the few days, charged there again on the way home.

I think there’s a fast charger at the hotel in Redcastle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭SeanyMc22

Found a fast charger Weev charger in Buncrana which was a gift as it's close to a playground, cafe, shops, bars etc.

There's slow chargers 2 minutes up the road at the new Beach Houses being built.

So far highlights have been Malin Head, Farren's bar for food and Star Wars and Fort Dunree especially the drive over through the Gap Of Mamore.

Hotel is grand, busy enough. Rooms are okay and lovely breakfast friendly staff as previously mentioned.

Just remember it's €15 per night extra per child. I forgot that part 😔
