Reconciliation and Confession: a Catholic youth/age divide?

On my recent visits to churches for confession, I have been struck by the absence of penitents under the age of 60 years. I notice the same age dufference at weekly masses. On discussing the confession question with a few friends, I have been struck by their lack of appreciation of the difference between reconciliation, which is a daily process for all of us, and confession which to a large extent, seems to be a sacrament for the over 60s only. Can confession as we know it survive?
