BBC on Saorview

We have an old Tv in a spare room with just a walker saorview receiver bought when Saorview first came in. We always had BBC channels on it until very recently. Now a full scan just picks up Irish channels. Would anything have changed recently?

    I'm a real technophobe .

you have benefitted from overspill coverage from an NI or Wales transmitter. Looks like they changed something (power levels or frequency slots) that has weakened that coverage.

It would be worth checking periodically (by using the setup/channel scan options on the Walker box menu) in case it comes back.

Could also be an issue with the aerial setup if all the channels suddenly disappeared.

HD changover? How old is the TV?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,868 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

That could well be it. The TV must be over 25, and possibly nearer 30, years old.

There is no UK terrestrial TV changeover to HD.

No 25-30 year old digital TV was compatible with Saorview. UK TVs that old were MPEG-2 only. Saorview is MPEG-4.

The first MPEG-4 TVs hit Ireland about 2008. I purchased a Sony model that May. Still going strong as a bedroom TV.

Saorview started MPEG-4 engineering test transmissions in August 2008

Its likely an issue with your aerial or very good weather or high pressure. When you rescan it will drop weak channels and they will only come back if you scan while there is a strong signal. If you can afford it get out a TV installer to investigate. If you tell us which county you are in and put up a photo of the antenna on the roof and make and model of tv and set top box we might be able to try guide you.

I have a Walker tv 2008 which picks up Saorview but no english channels as Jim_Hodge.So,bought an older model then because cannot scan for UK.

A Saorview TV is generally backwards compatible with the Freeview SD channels, MPEG-4 vs MPEG-2.

If you're in a Freeview overspill area with the correct aerial to receive the UK channels it should store the channels in the 800 range.

If you suddenly lose the UK channels that were being received ok then there is probably an issue with your aerial setup

There has also been transmitter work happening some evenings/nights recently on NI transmitters - I've lost all the channels a couple of times during overnight scans where Divis has been on low power and the automatic retune hasn't found anything - but a retune in the daytime should obviously bring them back if that's happened.

Hi, Not sure is this the right place but will ask anyway. While I seem to have BBC HD, CH4 HD and all the rest, except the ITV channels on my Saorview box. I have retuned all the channels but still no ITV. Is anyone else having this problem?

There has been a lot of moves recently and it's possible they have moved to frequencies not stored in your receiver so it won't search what's not there

Check the link for the tuning parameters for the required frequencies

    What receiver do you have?

    Hi The Cush,

Not sure what type of receiver I have. I have Sky as well and I have a cable coming from thea to the Saorview Box. I will try to tune them in . Thanks

Just to say as well. I have a sky hd box upstairs just for freeview and I have ITV on that.

Just to ask in here since the thread is a similar subject but my parents had an issue with their Sky satellite dish being damaged during the storm yesterday and won't be able to get a Sky technician out for a few weeks apparently so have lost access to the channels that aren't on saorview.

Is it possible to manually tune those channels into modern tvs receiving saorview similar to a sky box or does it need special equipment?

No, you won't be able to tune in any extra channels on Saorview, what you see is what you get.

Many TV's have additional satellite tuners so you could connect a dish to pick up BBC, ITV, C4, etc, but as the dish is damaged, it's no odds anyway.

This close to Christmas you might be better off getting a local aerial/dish installer to sort it, might just need to be realigned.
