Hey all. I'll be in the market for a new computer soon and looking for suggestions.

Currently using a Polar m460 and is a bit outdated. Looking for something not overly expensive to record distance, elevation, time, HR, all the usual & to be able to connect to strava. Don't particularly need colour or mapping.

    Thanks.

Just bought a new M460 last year - what do you reckon you're missing from it?

Age, it's about 6 years old now, looking for something newer.

Edge 130plus seems to cover most of what you are looking for. Simple, no frills data.

+1 on this I'd say if you don't need mapping. It'll even support a power meter if you ever need to scratch that itch. Upload to Garmin Connect and onward syncing to Strava is a doddle (NB - I've a 530, but I think they all operate the same for uploads)

I've a 130+, it does the job and the battery life is surprisingly good - I did a 90km spin a couple of weeks back, forgot to charge it and went out for another 90km the following week. I was sure it wouldn't make it but got back with 1% left 😀. It'll probably go further if you turn off Bluetooth etc. Whilst it doesn't have maps, it does do "trail of breadcrumbs" navigation which I've found works fairly well when I've used it.

I have a sigma rox that the young lad owns. He bought himself a second hand garmin to help manage counting sets and stuff when training. That's really the only feature that was missing.

It's a decent computer only about a year old. Might suit your needs, this is it below, will keep the HRM.

Thanks for the offer but I'd be looking for something a bit more up to date

Ive an igpsport 630s and like it. Big display, rerouting, Iclimb and loads of other features i dont use😅. Got it for like 200 on bikeinn

    They've a cheaper smaller model called bsc300.

"Looking to record distance, elevation, time, HR, all the usual & to be able to connect to Strava"

If that's all you want either of these will do you. 👍

They're great value, looking for a bike specific though 👍🏻

The edge 130 is old now. There is a good chance of a 140 coming soon as all the other 30 series has updated to 40.

The battery life is insane on the 630s. Really impressive. It's like an ereader. Weeks without needing a charge

Boots up in 5 seconds, gps lock instantly.

( most other computers take up to a minute to do this)

Sounds like you're not sure what you want @Mundo7976 other than it should be new and shiny.

Experience would suggest that bike computers in general are used for about 10% of the capability they offer - especially at the higher end of the market.

Elsewhere, it's a bit of magpie syndrome, which the manufacturers obviously love and encourage.

Case in point, the ClimbPro function on Garmins to my eyes only serves to say "You're going to be in a world of pain for the next 20 minutes sunshine". I prefer to remain oblivious 😂

One thing that drives me absolutley insane about that climb pro thing is - you're abroad in Spain or something and following a route. You come to a junction and you're just peering down and trying to figure out exactly which way you're supposed to go to follow the route and BING! CLIMB STARTING - the stupid poxy garmin directions screen disappears and shows you the climb. There you are in the middle of a roundabout or cross roads swiping left or right to get back to the fcuking directions screen.

    GAAAH!!!!!!

i've an edge 25 i bought for €45 in lidl about ten years ago and it's still going strong!

that said, i've never used the navigation function on it. there's about five or six hours battery life in it, i'd guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,355 ✭✭✭JMcL

Yup, that's annoying. I've never had it happen at a junction, but I'm usually more concerned with seeing my power and HR when I'm on a climb rather than some graphic. I've set up the satellite buttons on the top of my di2 shifters to page up/down on the Garmin, so at least I can keep the hands on the hoods, but those buttons are stiff as hell so it is a faff.

I got an EDGE 840 when they came out there recently, have to say it could be a lot more user friendly. Early days if I wiped the screen forgetting it bring touchscreen I've had to stop to get the spin screen back up. Now I lock the screen on every spin. Probably take me a 3 day course to come to terms with it 😂

Yes I'm a big fan of the Sigma stuff too. Very good quality at reasonable prices, provided you don't buy of their website ;-) If you search around you'll find them heavily discounted on may websites.

This is the link from their website:

There are a view different options, but this is the one for me as I'm mainly interested in basic data and navigation. I also like the crash detection feature, as I'm an older cyclist and it gives my family peace of mind (Whether it is any good is another thing!).
