Bleach and nail brush. Leave it for a while

Yep, bleach and hot water works great on old grout. Even some of those sprays designed for mould and mildew are bleach based and'll do a good job on tiles and grout. Do make sure the window is open though.

Spray it all with bleach and white vinegar leave it on it for 20 mins and scrub it with a nail brush.

Rinse and repeat on areas needed

Would the bleach damage the sealing that the grout provides and allow moisture to creep in through the spaces between the tiles and affect the tile adhesive or am I overthinking this.

Your over thinking it. Clean it and spray on grout sealer to protect it in future.

Ya you might be right I am doing a lot of cleaning now as my good wife has got herself an exemption from it with her bad back and is talking full advantage of it, I was hoping they might be some magical machine somewhere that would do the trick but looks like I am going to have to get down and dirty and start scrubbing. Thanks guys for advice and tips.

the bleach (or that cillit bang stuff i mentioned if the bleach doesn't do it) shouldn't need scrubbing. just spray it on, leave it a few minutes and then rinse off.

If you have an oscillating multi tool then you can get a grout removal blade for it that works better than any other method I've ever tried.

You can pick up the blades for about 3 euro and even if you had to buy the multi tool just for the job it'd be 50 euro well spent. There's no big mess and just take your time doing it with a vacuum cleaner on standby. Slightly angle the tool from side to side and you will remove every trace of grout without damaging the tiles. I did a 25 square yard floor of 300x300 travertine not so long ago using just one blade, it didn't damage one single tile and the new grout made it look like a totally new job.

How long did it take? I would love to remove the grout in the bathroom and replace as the grout is dark and I hate it. Wondering if it would be an expensive job to get someone in to do it.

Took about 6 hours to remove all the old grout and prep the floor for fresh grout the following day but that included a couple of coffee breaks.

I don't know how much someone would charge you to do your bathroom.
