hi all, my old HP Omen workstation is on its last legs. its the guts of 8 years old so cant really complain at this stage. the 128GB SSD is simply not big enough for todays uses.

    https://support.hp.com/ie-en/document/c05352539

im in the market for something now that will last me a while.

my main uses are architectural design using autocad apps, sketchup etc. after that some pdf editing and basic office apps. Storage is a big draw on resources (photos emails etc) so im looking at least at 1TB SSD and probably a 1 or 2TG HD. maybe a 2TG SSD would suffice but not sure of the economics.

im seeing a huge amount of 32gb ram 1tb SSD machines for sale with prices ranging from €1.5k to over €3k and im not informed in enough to know the difference between them.

my budget is above 2k and below 3k

i did build a pc previous, probably over 10 years ago at this stage, but im not sure id go at it again. Definitely not without help. I need something pretty quickly as my daily routine these days involves deleting temp files to make space on my ssd to run.

has anyone any suggestions as to the better machines out there? should i go to the likes of pc specialist and get them to build something for me? any very good deals out there?

    TIA

If storage is an issue, you could look at a DAS or NAS arrangement. If it's filled with nvme drives, they'll be fast and silent, and provide resiliency through a RAID setup.

Is this machine for work? How much do you rely on it for income? I'd be wary of building your own machine for work and I build/teach building for all my extended family. A PC for games is one thing, a machine you need for work is another.

The problem here is the most recent Intel CPUs have a major flaw in them and most of the big pre-builts rely on those CPUs. That leaves Lenovo as your best option that I'm aware of. Check out the Legion Tower 5 Gen 8 (AMD). You can buy a spare NVMe drive easy enough and these machines have two spare slots for it. Easy to install. You'll have to get the 512 GB NVMe drive that comes with the machine unfortuately.

What I would do after that is select the option not have an OS. Save €100 and pick up a online key. Perfectly legal. Then clean install on your new 2TB drive and you are golden.

So mostly prebuilt but with buying your own drive and installing Windows yourself you are getting the benefit of the warranty while clawing back some of that margin Lenovo are getting.

Open to other ideas if anyone has one.
