This is to be released around Christmas, but reviews are out after the premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It stars Nicole Kidman as a corporate CEO who has an affair with a younger intern, and just from that we might think we already know how it's going to play out. From the reviews it sounds a lot more interesting, though, saying that the movie blends genres and has a lot of humour mixed in. There's no official trailer from A24 yet, just some fake trailers.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Does a Christmas release make this a Christmas movie? The full trailer is out, and it’s… confusing. (Good.)

Looks interesting A24 really releasing some excellent stuff.

Has Nicole Kidman ever been busier?! She seems to be in so many things at the minute!

Anyone been to see this yet? Here's Mark Kermode's review:

    Babygirl – 5/10

Nice of Hollywood to release yet another Christmas film when the festive season is well and truly over, but in fairness, this isn’t exactly a traditional Christmassy affair like The Holdovers.

Everyone seemed to agree that Nicole Kidman was a terrible piece of casting for The Northman, with her botox face looking completely out of place in Viking times. This is much more in her wheelhouse as they manage to work her penchant for cosmetic procedures into the plot.

She plays a successful CEO of an AI automation company who ends up having an affair with a young intern (Harris Dickinson). The dynamic between them in the sex scenes is weird and uncomfortable. Only occasionally does it verge towards feeling raunchy, which is a huge detriment to a film like this.

It touches on themes of shifting power dynamics, kink shaming and workplace misogyny but never fully gets a handle on any of them. It feels like a movie that is confused as to what point it’s trying to make and there’s a real lack of concision with the ending. There’s one particular scene involving the husband (Antonia Banderas) where some bizarre choices are made. It felt like something fanciful that would only ever happen in the mind of a woman.

It has (what I’m going to assume is) the first saxophone soundtracked sex montage of the decade, but even that can’t save it. It currently has a 50% score on rotten tomatoes which checks out, as I think general audiences are going to find it very off-putting. The 2002 film Secretary is a better option for this kind of thing.

Saw it tonight, I’d give it 6/10 max. My friend was also quite underwhelmed.

It’s not really that kinky, or that sexy. Agree the movie was unclear about what point it was making. Nicole Kidman was good as always but it just didn’t gel as a movie for me.

Just out of this. An easy, slam dunk, 1/10. It was brutal. The sex scenes weren't sexy and at multiple times the cinema I was at had quite a lot of people laughing at things that, I guess, were supposed to be raunchy.

Kidman doesn't really act, the lad she's having the affair with is just a bit weird. There's a minor subplot about her assistant that comes out of nowhere.

    Dreadful movie. Avoid.
