Ubiquiti Edge Router working with one Eir FTTH line but not the other

    Hello,

I have a Eir FTTH link connected to a Edge router (Ubiquiti). Port eth0 (VLAN 10) is directly connected to the eir Fibre box configured for DHCP and I do get a Eir public IPv4 address on the port and all working as expected.

I got a second FTTH line installed last week in another house which is literally 20 yards from my main house. If I test the same Edgerouter with this new line I do get an IP address from Eir but no traffic occurs. The stats pane on the Edge router shows zero on the Tx and Rx lines and the Internet is not reachable. There is clearly something different between these lines even if the new FC box installed by Eircom looks identical to the one that I have had for a few years and where the Edge router works without problems. Have you had any experience with this ? Note that If I put the Eir supplied router (Sagecom) the internet connection is working without problem on this new line, it's just the Edge router that is not working

    Thanks

    Paul

Check the settings page on the Sagecom too see what kind of link it's configuring.

Any chance one of your connections is a straight DHCP connection and the other one needs a PPPoE setup?

I need PPPoE on mine and also needed to clone the MAC address of the Eir supplied router. Do you recall if you did that on your ownn connection?

Ibeen using Edge router on my Eir connection at home since week one and have set up a few others as well.

Thanks Niall, if I put the Sagecom, I just set the WAN link to DHCP, no PPPoE. The working link was setup a few years ago and can't recall cloning the MAC, I will tomorrow and update the thread….

I needed to clone my MAC and set up PPPoE, but it's possibly because I have a static IP.

Do you still have the original box Eir provided that you replaced with the EdgeRouter?
Maybe worth seeing how that one behaves next door for comparison to the Sagecom.

Hi Niall, so the Sagecom box works with both lines, actually I tested two different Sagecom boxes both work on both lines. I have a dynamic IP not static. Yesterday I assigned the MAC address of one of the Sagecom boxes to the Edge router. Same behavior. It works ok on the original line, it doesn't work on the new line, even with the Sagecom MAC address assigned to eth0 on my edge router which is my wan interface. On the original line it also works with the original Edge router MAC address, (no need to put a Sagecom MAC). I also put the Sagecom in bridge mode, plugged in the Edge router to the bridged Sagecom: same scenario. On the original line eth0 gets the public IP address, on the new line I get no IP assigned. If I put my laptop instead I do get the public IP assigned and do get internet connectivity. So it's a very weird issue. It seems that that there is some difference between the old line and new line and the Edge router is not able to get the public IP address. I also rang the support, but nobody really have a clue. They asked me to power of and on the FFTH box, and then they told me that they don't support the third party routers (even if it works on the original line) and cannot help me. They told me to use the Sagecom router. I will have to do so for now.

If you compare the bills is there any difference in the name of the service?

No point ringing Eir support (unless you get JD!) . They have no reason to support your Edgerouter.
That's not the same as saying it won't work - just that it's not their problem.

What are you plugging the LAN port into in each case?
Is the internal DHCP service running on the Edgerouter or further in?

    Hi Niall,

Thanks for the replies. The line description on the bill is exactly the same and no I have an external DHCP server that assigns IPs on the internal LAN. The LAN ports aren't relevant anyway. The fact is that the WAN port (eth0 on my Edge router) is not getting any IP assigned when connected on the new line. If I move the eth0 cable to the original line it does indeed. The Sagecom router instead, gets the IP either that I connect it to the original line or the new line. When I move the Edgerouter from the working line to the non working line I don't change any parameters in the Edge router itself and expect it to behave the same (get a public IPv4 address from Eir) which doesn't happen for some weird reason. Both the Sagecom and Edge router are configured to receive an automatic IP address on the WAN link. Anyway I will forget about this for now. I will use the Sagerouter and that's it. If I come across another third party router I will test that as well see if it works
