    Hi.

    1. I've been searching everywhere to get an answer on whether I need to lay a membrane + what kind when puting down sma tarmac?

I got 2 quotes + one guy said no need for it + the other said if I'm not at the house often (holiday home) it may be useful. Most opinions online on laying membrane are in regard to laying pebbles/stone/pavers.¹

    Quote 1

2-6 inches of 804 limestone compacted

    2.5 inches of sma tarmac

    Qoute 2

75 ml (3") lime stone compacted

50 ml (2") stone mastic asphalt (sma)

    Membrane (didn't say what kind)

    2. Also since the second quote didn't mention what kind of limestone are there different kinds?

    Any other advice appreciated.

Really need an answer this weekend if possible.

    TIA.

mornyc Did you find an answer to this question?

I have this exact question myself now. One contractor saying geo textile membrane under the 804 and SMA is essential.

Another contractor is saying that it's better to spray the moss and weeds before putting down the 804 and SMA and no membrane is needed.

    Any further thoughts?

We put new 804 and SMA on a long driveway (about 200 meters) back in 2010 with no membrane. We never had weeds on the old compacted 804 drive before we updated it. Sprayed before hand and I spray the drive several times a year with a mixture of Mosgo and Roundup. Not a weed in sight and driveway has stood the test of time. For me its more about ongoing maintenance in the long term.

This is mental, you need geofabric down period. Geofabric is not to stop weeds, it’s to stop soil heave and segregate clay from stone. Is there hardcore or 6f2 on the formation where you are putting the road in?
