Cistern Plunger (siphon) not connecting

Hi all, I recently had a new cistern parts put in - and my issue is that the plunger (siphon) wont fit on - so when i flush it comes loose. Any ideas here, do i need an extension or why does the part not fit on? Any help appreciated as i havent been able to flush without taking top off and holding the part down!
