Two Current Accounts

Has anyone heard of a bank not letting you have two current accounts?

My wife has a current account with An Post Money that she uses as her main account. She also has another current account that we use for direct debits and various other stuff. Her card for her main account got stolen recently and we've been having issues with the online banking. She just rang them to sort things out and they just told her she can't have two accounts. They said we'd have to close the account we use for direct debits, which is going to be a major hassle.

    Ask them why not.

We're going to ring them back later but I wanted to check if this was a thing. It makes no sense that they allowed her to open two accounts and now they're saying she can't have a second one.

I had two current accounts with Bank of Ireland for many years; it was never an issue. (I no longer do, but that's because I chose to close one.)

The bottom line, though, is that you can't compel a bank to let you run two current accounts if they don't want to. All you can do is threaten to take yourself and your squillions to a more accommodating bank. And if you don't have squillions, that may not be such a massive threat.
