I need to collect some bulky stuff from UK and so want to hire a van (transit size), take it over the ferry & return. I am in Co Clare.

Any recommendations for van hire company that would allow this?

How do I book a ferry ticket if I don't know the reg of the van?

Is this going to cost me two arms and a leg?

Probably cheaper to get a groupage haulier to collect it for you.

Plenty of them around the Limerick/ Clare area.

I think most of the companies allow driving to the UK at no extra charge.

Yes,they should. Why not ring the Clare/Limerick offices of the major rental companies.I have driven a Renault van.Customs on both sides will have a sniff but usually briefly

Try www.irishcourier.co.uk I see them advertising on Facebook and Donedeal or as Allinall says a groupage haulier if the load is suitably packaged.

I don't think any of the local van hire companies will allow vans to go to the UK since Brexit. A call to HireaVan on the Ballysimon road in Limerick might be worth a shot.

Maybe Enterprise Van Rentals might as they are an international company I think they have a branch in Limerick city as well as Shannon airport.

I don't think Enterprise allow you to take the vehicles off the island of Ireland. Europcar definitely don't allow it.

Not many of the rental companies will allow vans to be taken off the island.

Drive Van Rental used to allow it - they are now part of National Truck & Van, but locations in Dublin and Cork only.

We used Enterprise a few years ago. I think there was an extra €200 charge for going to Britain.

We were collecting household items we had in storage from when we lived there. We kept records of council tax and storage fees as proof that these were personal household items being returned, and we also wrote up a inventory list of the items so when we arrived back in Dublin they just had a quick glance at the list and looked inside the van before waving us on.

If it's not personal belongings you might need to sort out if any of the items are due import taxes.

You don’t need the reg when booking the ferry. You can update the reg before arriving at the port
