colour vision testing - electrical / automation roles

my son has been offered an apprenticeship in mechanical automation maintenance fitting with a US pharma company - he did really well to get the job but has failed the colour vision test (there may have been lighting issues in the room, it doesn't seem to have been the standard ishihara test and it was administered by a nurse, not medical doctor/optemetrist/optician)

the company brought him in to do an in-house, practical assessment on components/wiring etc and he passed that 100%

so they've effectively told him to go and get a retest that he passes.

while he may pass a retest now, for future jobs is it a standard thing in electrical / automation industry to have the colour vision test at medicals?

    Depends on the company.

For big multi nationals that I've worked at you do tend to do a medical and they're done inhouse. For other smaller or non multi nationals they didn't need one.

That's for all jobs with those companies.

For electrical apprenticeship you need a colour vision test. Nearly sure I did mine in Specsavers but that was 20 years ago

Now that you mention it does make sense.

Correct, I remember having to do this myself. Passing it is also a mandatory requirement for a number of other jobs. The army insist on this too.
