I am trying to decide on a security camera option for my workshop, that is suitable for diy. Problem is there are so many things out there, confusion on the matter is an understatement. Is there something out there that can be accessible from my phone at another location, receive alerts , and control the camera when i am off site. My existing wifi signal is very poor at times. Any pointers would be welcome, thankyou. I hope i have posted in the correct forum, if not, mods please move it for me. Thankyou

If you can hold out until you are connected to the fibre optic service then the Eufy set up is a no brainer. Top quality product, all mod cons, no monthly charges.

Not sure i can hang on until 2026 to be honest, I may not make it that far myself, let alone a decent signal😂

I came across eufy for certain, but poor signal strength means it may be redundant. I could mange with one camera at a push. And could possibly position that on the shed corner and hardwire that into the mains. And put the wifi router alongside it and then ethernet cable into the camera. Does that sound like a plan?

I put up a few PTZ camera's outside and used a couple of these and hard wired them in because of bad wifi. I have one in a garage beside the house as well and it works fine. I used a 5 port Ethernet network switch and a DC Power Supply Splitter 1 to 5 Plugs Y Connector 2.1mm Adapter Cable to link the cameras and put it all in a large IP65 junction box on the back of the house.. All can be got on Amazon.

Many thanks for your knowledgeable input. But I'm not afraid to say most of its gone way over my head😏 I get the link kit, but as for the rest and the way they connect together, or the dc power input, I'm afraid you lost me. Unless its got a vw attached to it, its way out of my comfort zone. Sorry

    FYI

My garage would be about 20ft from the rear of the house. I would always have got a very poor wifi signal from the house there, practically non existent.

Then I installed a Mesh wifi system at home to improve the in-house spread of signal. This involved 3 nodes scattered around the house. 1 of these is in the bedroom nearest the garage, and I now get full strength wifi signal in the garage and in the outside area at the back of the house.

I picked mine up secondhand for very little money.

    Worth exploring for now?

Is your broadband hardwired in or is it mobile broadband with a router. My own is mobile broadband with intermittent signal strength, more often than not les than 1mbps. I just did a walkaround the house and got readings from , zero to 62.5mbps. But seriously inconsistent. My providor refuses to update my modem, unless I sign up for another 24 months, which is not going to happen. My last modem upgrade was 2016

    It's not mobile broadband, no.

I suppose you have to have a steady and decent signal to begin with, otherwise the Mesh won't be much use overall. Although I do think they can strengthen a weak signal too.

What the powerline adapters do is use you're electric circuits to send the internet signal through the sockets so you plug one in beside the router and connect it with a cat 5/6 Ethernet cable then put the other one or if you need more than one you can use multiple ones beside where you need the signal to go and connect the camera with a cat 5/6 Ethernet cable.

The DC power supply splitter just means you don't need to run multiple cables for the cameras from an electrical point. I have one cable running from the house to the junction box and from there the cables are ran to each camera via the splitter. The same with the Ethernet cable, I have one cable running from the router in the house to the junction box and then the 5 port internet switch has cables running to the cameras. Good luck with the van!

Thanks Con, that now makes perfect sense. I had a long chat with an ex tech guy for 3 in a previous life. Lovely helpful chap. He would not sell me a system for a wifi setup, as he assured me my own wifi was way below what would give a reasonable result for my outlay. Honest chap. he said both the signal strength and quality could not be brought up to a reasonable level , and was adamant that the system would just not work.

At the moment my signal strength is so low, as to be useless, his contention is that a consistent strength signal is easier to improve, than an intermittent signal, which makes sense. So first order of business is to find a providor that can give me an adequate signal for my money. My last providor refuses to give me a newer modem than my 8 year old one, without me signing up for more useless quality. I am finished doing that now.

I'm in the same boat regarding signal, the only option I have is wireless with speeds varying from 3mb to 30mb depending on time of day but my cameras are always stable unless the signal goes to low kbs which can happen! The joys of living in the arsehole of nowhere with no mobile signal either!

Ah sure I only have to wait until December 2026 if I'm lucky to get the fibre rollout according to NBI. If you are a long way off with the fibre rollout maybe look into Starlink Elon Musks satellite system, it's a bit expensive but is getting great feedback on the quality of signal.

If you've good mobile 4 or 5G coverage you could go with a spare mobile phone and use hotspot on it to connect to the camera system? There alot doing this already and I've seem some good quality cctv cameras from amazon that were around the €150 - 200 mark

Jaysus if the mrs caught me spending 70 euros a month to look at old rusty vdubs on the net she would launch my arse into space along with starlink satelliets , with a kick. Then i would get a great signal😂🤣

I spent this evening looking at brdy satellite broadband packages, my brother is a customer and big online gamer and he swears by it, and 50 euros a month is not bad for a top speed signal.

Starlink is €50 a month as well from what I can see but you need to buy the hardware upfront, best of luck with it. There's a thread about it on here.

Went with Eufy 2 camera kit with homebase, 299 euro.

I know cart before the horse with the wifi signal I have. And a long discussion with the ex £ rep told me all I need to know. I bought the kit as it was reduced on offer, and the reviews on it seem good. I knew my wifi needed sorting with a new ISP providor, my existing one after 20+ years refused to give me a replacement modem unless i signed up for another 24months of the same crap. No way. So I told them to put in my 30 days notice to cancel.

By Jaysus that woke them up.

They assured me the engineers were abseiling down onto my roof as we speak, like a murder of crows.I was transferred up the line to the head magician who was gonna fix things for me. I was dumbfounded. They assured me that i was the most important irishman since Obama. Things were going to get fixed and all i needed to do was keep the money rolling in, and forget those nasty thoughts about cancelling the direct debit , and go back to sleep.

No way Anjali, cancel it now please.I swear i could hear the pc's in mumbai go into overdrive, and techs calling me things like "valued, important, loyal, longest customer, . Nah, do the cancellation for me please, my mind is made up I said.

NO,no,no,nnnoooooooo, they replied. We can fix this they said, with a reduction in your monthly payment, by 10 euro they said. Blimey, that was a shock. No, make the call Anjali, i want out. Hang on a minute he said, we will give you 20 euro a month discount, and all you will have to pay is 9.99 a month for 12 months. Second shock that was. My last reply was, And what the f..k am i going to do with less than 1mbps download speed, and 0.00 upload speed for a tenner a month. make the cancellation now please.

Anyway, the camera tech told me its doubtful the cameras would work with my signal, but I had already made the decision to go with fibre broadband for 500mbps ISP providor. Funnything is the cameras and homebase are up and working away, but lag at times.

So after all these years I no longer need a standing order for vaseline and ky jelly from my local pharmacy, as i am no longer getting fekked by my useless ISP.

I went with Puretelecom as they have fibre braodband at my location for 35 euro a month 5 euro more than what i was paying for the worst broadband providor I know. I have already had the worst, so anything else is an improvement.

Do you mind saying who you left? Best of luck with the camera's.

Dont mind at all, i should have left years ago. It was Three, and it was mobile broadband with a B535 modem. Very old tech, but they would not give me an upgrade unless i signed a 24 month contract. I was actually off contract for the past 2-3 years.

This morning i received confirmation of what I have been complaining about for more than 20 years.

    Quote .

I have reviewed the signal at your address and you are currently on the edge of the cell range. This may result in inconsistent service and fluctuating signal strength. Additionally, you may experience issues due to increased traffic on the network.

    Endquote.

Ariva derchi Three……….I wont be back.

Ha, ha. On the morning of my Puretelecom modem delivery something strange has happened. My last communication with three was an e mail from them yesterday, explaining why i had no signal for the last 20+ years. They said i was on the edge of their cell range.

This morning by some strange co incidence their signal has gone from .5 mbps download and 0.00 upload readings from speedtest, up to, wait for it 7.1 mbps download and 7.21 mbps upload. ha,ha. The satellite must be aligned with the centre of the known universe. I wonder how long that lasts.

    Just a headsup on progress.

This morning the installation crew was in and out in less than 1 1/2 hours. New line put in from the pole for the fibre broadband, cable installed into the room where its needed, along with the necessary equipment.

So……my speeds have gone from .5mbps all the way up to 100+mbps at my pc now.

I'd say thats a massive improvement for sure. In the sitting room where the router is it measured 530mbps earlier in the day. I'd say thats a win win.
