Oil level exceeded

HI. Got my 520d back from a service and it gave me an oil level exceeded warning on dash, rang the mechanic and he came out and took a small amount of oil out of it.

It's reading just under the top line on the dipstick with no warning on the dash but when I do a check oil level diagnostic it still shows an oil level exceeded warning but the dipstick says otherwise.

The warning hasn't come back since so I'm wondering does anyone know of any issues with sensors or anything else involving this model. It's a 191

These threads might shed some light:

Could be a software bug or failing that the oil level senor is faulty.

The good thing is that you have a dipstick. Go with that value. Clear the fault code and drive on for a good while.

If it doesn't go away after a few weeks, then it's probably the oil sensor. The bad news is that you will need to have the oil changed again when replacing the sensor.

Alternatively, clear the codes, disconnect the battery for 30mins - 1hr, reconnect and see what happens. If the code returns then change sensor as above.

The errors will be registered and stored on the ECU.

If it's a diesel it's an error associated with the DPF been blocked and to frequent regenerations flooding the sump with diesel fuel and raising the oil level. As such once it's triggered it's a serious fault and should be dealt with so it holds the code. It's not a simple procedure to clear this code on some vehicles.

So that's the background, and obviously none of it applies to your situation. You might want your mechanic to clear the ECU code since you are unlikely to be able to do it yourself.

Test drove a Volvo for my sister a few weeks ago. Could not believe it didn't have a dipstick! Hope this isn't a trend..
