Mad bill from Electric Ireland

On the 8/8/24 I received a bill from Electric Ireland for €1200 for the period 5/6/24 - 7/8/24. Our usual bill is around €300. Needless to say I was dumbfounded.

The ESB installed a new smart meter on 10/6/24 and took out the old one. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the new meter, it's in line with our previous usage. When the ESB took out the old meter they took a photo of the readings.

Old meter readings for 5/4/24 - 5/6/24 were - day 10685 and night 15686 (not an estimated bill, I did the readings myself but I didn't keep the photos)

Old meter readings for 5/6/24 - 10/6/24 were - day 12361 and night 17168. That is stating we used over 3000 units in 5 days during the summer. The most we have ever used was 2000 units for 2 months in winter. Obviously this seems to be where the issue is.

I was talking to someone in Electric Ireland and they suggested getting an ESB technician to call out and have a look. I had a problem with this because they were going to charge me nearly €200 for the call out and since the old meter is gone what would they be looking at.

Any ideas as what could have happened or how to deal with Electric Ireland?

So you read and uploaded the meter readings on or around the 5th June but the meter was then replaced with a smart meter on the 10th of June and was photographed by ESBn as having (12361 - 10685) 1676 day units and (17168 - 15686) 1482 night units consumed between the 5th and the 10th of June.

Does the meter's serial number in the photo from ESBn match your old meter serial, or can you check that in some way?

I can't think of too much other than that as the documentary evidence makes you liable for the unit usage as you can't prove otherwise at this point.

Needless to say always take your own phot on meter changes

I would assume ESBN retain the photo ?

I would have assumed you have a good case here
