Irregular Indicator Problem on Car

Hello,

My car has recently developed a strange problem with the indicator. When I put the indicators on sometimes the ticking noise inside the car gets much faster than normal, and the little bulb on the dashboard showing the direction of indicators is flashing faster than normal. Sometimes it is at the normal sound & bulb flashes normally on dash board. It varies from indicating left or right. On one side of the car the sound can be normal when signalling and the other side fast ticking and vice versa. All I can hear & see is the noise of the indicator inside the car and the bulb flashing on the dashboard. When it does this I assume the bulb in the indicator housing on the exterior of the car is also flashing faster, but anytime I put the indicators on whilst viewing the car at a standstill the car indicates normally. It only seems to play up when the car is moving.

Is this likely to be an issue for the NCT? Or as long as the indicators bulbs are flashing on the exterior of the car does varying speeds of flashing bulbs matter?

Anyone have an idea what is causing this, what the fault is?

The car is a 21 year old Peugeot 406 Hdi. Everything else works fine. Thanks in advance for any help / advice.

Check your bulbs first thing to do as worn bulbs go black and need to be changed.

Secondly as its a Pug might be corroded printed circuit board / block connection / earth .

Have somebody in car operating brake lights / side lights / indicator and you might see the whole board light up instead of each section.

Its a blown bulb, this is what happens when one dies. replace all the bulbs

Agreed, its probably a blown bulb somewhere. But theres no need to replace all the bulbs. Just check which one is blown

if not the bulb it might be a loose wiring issue

I have been out and put the indicators on both left & right - had a look from the exterior of the car & all bulbs are flashing also all bulbs flashing on hazards. So possibly wiring issue as mentioned by Xander10

Could be a fuse.

When I saw the title of the thread, the first thing that occurred was French car. And so it was.

As i have worked on pugs as their electronics and wiring are shocking .

p.206 issues with circuit board on back lights , you have to buy a new lamp with circuit board + those block connectors on printed circuit boards burn the contacts away.

Bulbs can have crud on the base or side of bulb giving a bad connection and would better be removed and rechecked.

As poster said it only happens when driving a second person is needed to go through the brakes that could show up a bad earth which is a common issue.

The Car is a Peugeot 406 from 2003. Ain't no lights on no mirrors in 2003 😀

I doubt 5w bulbs would give those issues but 21w do.

I would agree, the quality of the electrical systems on the 406 leave a lot to be desired. I remember having to rewire a lighting circuit on a similar model as the gauge of the wiring for the headlamps was so small that the usage of the high beams over a prolonged period would burn out the cabling and connector.

There is no need but a car that age if one bulb goes the others are going to follow shortly.

MIght be the relay working intermittently.
