Their pack is €1.49 for 500g. Your loose one is a bit cheaper per gram. SuperValu would have been €1.27 for 400g, and again more per gram for the pack. Parsnips just aren't that cheap.

    Why not grow your own.

No need to pay people to plant it, no need to pay people to keep an eye during growing, no need to pay people to harvest it, no need to pay people to wash it, grade it and pack it, no need to pay for distribution and no need to give the supermarket the profit and contribution to retail costs either.

You can do it all yourself and save €1.02

But, how much was the loose carrot?

9 months to create a reply - the parsnips are harvested now.

The post was to show that there is a real cost for items and many stages. The cost of growing your own is far higher as you don't have economies of scale. Even if you had a garden or a large balcony box, the hassle and overall cost of growing a small amount of produce exceeds the price in a shop.

    Hence €1 is not bad.

Most people who grow their own fruit and veg do it for far more reasons than just cost.
