Griffith Avenue Bus Stop Upgrade!

    The NTA or DB are upgrading a stop that hasn't had a bus call for probably 10+ years.

    Is there a cost for upgrading the average stop with the new shelter/digital advertisment baords?

    Are they plans to resume service on this route?

    Presume it's just financial miss managment by another state quango.

    The 51A last served the stop in 2009. It is hoped the Go-Ahead service N2 (Heuston to Clontarf Road Station) will begin before the end of the year.

    Everyone in the area is assuming it will be used for the new N2 route that should be coming to Griffith Avenue soon.

    Actually they will also need to build a bus stop (probably just a stop, without shelter) on the other side of the road going East as well, otherwise there will be more then 1km between stops on the new N2 route along this route!

    BTW While this stop has been a ghost stop for more then a decade, it was maintained, was new ads put on it regularly, etc. So it will be good to finally see it actually in use again.

    It's still poor use of resources replacing a prefectly good bus stop. THere are many more busy stops without a bus shelter.

    Adding a brand new bus shelter where one doesn't already exist requires planning permission unfortunately, which can end up going to ABP and even a Judicial Review (see one of the BusConnects routes).

    Replacing an existing shelter with a new one doesn't require any planning, it is just maintenance.

    I don't think the issue is one of cost and more an issue around the broken planning process.

    The NTA has been replacing bus shelters all over the country, they replaced all the bus shelters in Cork City over the last 5 years, which in fairness were absolutely falling apart. They now seem to be gradually replacing shelters and updating stops as they rollout new BusConnects routes in Dublin like the N2, N4, etc.

    In fairness this stop shelter was 20+ years old, it wasn't the worst I've seen (compared to Cork), but it was pretty rough shape. It also had suffered vandalism in the past few months, with the bin next to it set on fire and burned out and the glass in the shelter was all smashed out in the last few weeks!

    As an aside, I believe the advertising on these shelters is supposed to cover the cost of maintaining and updating the shelters, so it isn't really supposed to cost anything.

    The advertising company pays for them to be upgraded. It’s not coming out of the public purse.

    The newer ones all use solar power off the roof so there may be savings to be made.
